Altamonte Springs is a small town in southern Florida, located about 25 miles east of downtown Miami. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of Miami-Dade County and is bordered by Everglades National Park to the south, Biscayne Bay to the north, and Naples to the west. The first settlement in what would become Altamonte Springs was made in 1885 when developers bought a tract of land from the Seminole Nation for $1,000. The town was laid out in 1907 and named for General John M. Altamont, who had been military governor of Cuba during World War I and then served as U.S. Representative from Florida from 1917 until his death in 1922. The post office opened on November 3, 1907, with Wanda Loomis as the first postmaster. In 1919 Altamonte Springs became a charter city under state law following annexation by Miami-Dade County; it remains an unincorporated community today but has adopted many municipal ordinances governing its residents. In 1959 Altamonte Springs accepted an invitation from then-Upper Volusia County to become its official county seat; it declined due to financial reasons but has since rejoinedMiami-Dade County government as a ceremonial county seat continuing its role as an unincorporated community.
