The Altamonte Springs military community has been a part of the United States since 1814. The first unit to be organized in what is now Altamonte Springs was the 1st Florida Regiment, which was raised on October 14, 1814. It was during the Seminole War that Altamonte Springs became home to one of the largest military communities in Florida. The 1st Florida Regiment served for five years and then disbanded on February 15, 1816. The 2nd Battalion of the 5th Regiment, Florida Volunteer Infantry (FVIP), also raised at Altamonte Springs in 1816, served until it disbanded on December 12, 1818. Altamonte Springs played a significant role in both World Wars I and II. In World War I, General John Mears USMC fought at Ocala Bay before being transferred to join General Douglas MacArthur's Fifth Army at Leytes Gulf. After successfully crossing enemy lines and leading his troops into battle against Japanese forces, Mears received the Medal of Honor for his actions that day. In World War II, elements from the 3rd Battalion (Alphonsus) FAIRBANKS REGIMENT were mobilized at Altamonte Springs and served as part of Third Marine Division during Operation Husky which saw Japan driven from their islands after three months of fighting. Additionally, members of the battalion co-operated with American forces during Operation Market Garden when they stormed Arnhem Pass in Belgium while under heavy artillery bombardment
Altamonte Springs is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The Altamonte Springs community was started as an agricultural village by early Spanish colonists in 1828 on a tract of land that now includes most of downtown Altamonte Springs and much of the suburbs to the north and east. The name "Altamonte" comes from two words: "altamont" (high mountain) and "onate" (a piece of property). In 1828, two Spanish colonists named José Antonio de la Garza and Manuel Alvarez were driving cattle up to Fort Moseley when they saw a high mountain ahead, which they called "altamontes". They drove their herd down to a settlement called Santa Fe de los Altamontes on some high ground near present-day Altamonte Springs. From this point on, it was known as Altamonte Springs. It wasn't until after the American Civil War that settlers began moving into what is now Altamonte Springs from all over South Florida. By 1875, there were 400 people living in what is now downtown Altamonte Springs; by 1920, there were 2,500 people living there. The first store in town opened in 1865; it was operated by John Pritchard who also founded Pritchard's Pharmacy & Saloon on Monterrey Road just west of I-95/Ulysses S Grant Boulevard today. The first school was built in 1867 along Indianola Avenue between Main Street and Estero Boulevard; it became known as Sacred Heart School after religious donations arrived from parishioners there. In 1870–71, St John's Episcopal Church moved from its original location at 10th Avenue and Washington Street to become one of the first churches in town; subsequent growth led to additional building throughout town during this time period including five schools (Alta Vista High School became Holy Cross High School in 1974), three hospitals ( Methodist Hospital acquired by Baptist Health System in 1961 becoming medical headquarters for Southwest Florida Health District before being reorganized as Palm Beach County Medical Center), four parks (Prairie Park served as annexation park for City of Orlando until 1971 when it became part of City Limits propelling Growth Development Corporation which sold it to Disney World Resort Authority which redeveloped it into Club Level Stadium with full NCAA football games played here beginning with the 2004 season) and more than 50 businesses including Pritchard's Pharmacy & Saloon where Drs JF Bachman & Jerry Fenton first worked together endowing each other's professorial chairs at Alta Vista HS back then too! In 1925–26 citrus growers Tryon W Henson Jr., Harry A Peasebrough & Chester W Ewing established Sharecropper Citrus Company Ltd doing business under various names including Tampa Fruit Growers Exchange Incorporated 1922 through 1924 then Pineapple Express Railroad Company 1926–1929 with terminals located at 33rd Place NW corner US 192 King Street SW then later Jacksonville Terminal lots 527 N Monroe Ave SE main Post Office address changed 1949 from 333 Harrison Ave NE to 333 Monroe Ave SE post office

Altamonte Springs, Florida is a small town located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 4,804 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area and is the most populous municipality within that area. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Altamonte Springs were tribes of Arawak Indians who lived along the Kissimmee River before sailing to Cuba in search of new land. They brought their cultures with them when they arrived and left behind evidence of their presence in what is today Altamonte Springs from as early as 1672 CE through 1821 CE when Spanish explorers discovered it for the first time. In 1855, two men named John Hickey and James Wofford purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) north of present day Altamonte Springs from developer James Kapp for $1,000 each. The men immediately began developing the site into a resort community that would soon become one of South Florida's most popular tourist destinations. The first hotel built on what is now Altamonte Springs Boulevard was the Connaught House which opened in 1857. The property still stands and has been renovated several times since then including a major remodel in 2003 which added an outdoor pool and spa complex as well as new retail spaces. The original name for this community was "Boca Raton," but after annexation by Miami-Dade County in 1959, Boca Raton became its official name whileAltamonte Spring underwent further development becoming one of Palm Beach County's fastest growing communities during the 1960s and 1970s thanks to its proximity to both Miami Beach and Hollywood Boulevard. In 1984, developer General Motors announced plans to build a massive manufacturing plant on 160 acres (60 hectares) adjacent toAltamonte Springs Boulevard which would eventually create over 1 million jobs throughout South Florida – oneofthe largest industrial projects ever undertaken in this region at that time! In 1907, the city of Orlando was founded adjacent to Altamonte Springs and rapidly grew in population. However, because of its distance from the major metropolitan areas, Altamonte Springs experienced relatively slow growth until recent decades.
