Altamonte Springs is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,615 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Altamonte Springs is located on U.S. 1 south of I-95 and north of the Everglades National Park. The community was named after General Antonio Luna y Costilla, governor of Cuba during the American Revolution. The first people to live in what is now Altamonte Springs were Native Americans who traveled down into what is now central Florida from Georgia and South Carolina sometime before 1000 AD. They were known as the Osage and their territory extended along parts of both coasts of Florida today including Palm Beach County and Broward County as far east as Jupiter Hills and west to Pompano Beach (then spelled "Pahrump"). While these early settlers were probably hunter-gatherers, they did establish a series of villages around Lake Okeechobee that are still standing today: Altamont, Belle Glade, Coral Gables, Dania Lakeshore; only two have been destroyed by development over the years--Belle Glade in 1992 and Coral Gables in 2008! The area that would eventually be called Altamonte Springs was originally inhabited by timberjacks—men who log trees for profit—and their families until 1851 when it became part of Spanish land grant Cienfuegos/Leyenda de las Palmas de Granma which included much of what is now Miami-Dade County. In 1835–36 José Joaquín Simón de la Luz founded La Habana – one of Cuban America’s earliest towns – on Key Biscayne Bayou near present day Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard just east of modern day Altamonte Springs Blvd., across from Dovernook Park which served as his plantation house until its sale to John Jacob Astor in 1841). From here begins one fascinating history event after another leading up to annexation by Mexico City on November 15th, 1898: On October 17th US forces under General James Fenton attacked TampaBay Naval Station anchored off Key Largo with the intention of annexing Cuba; Mexican forces responded with an overwhelming assault against our hastily erected fortifications culminating in a bloody victory that forced Admiral Dewey to retire from Havana Bay without taking any prisoners! This event marks perhaps the most dramatic moment in American military history!
