The wing was named after Maj Gen Raymond Tilton, Jr., who served as Commanding General of III Fighter Wing (Air Combat Command) during Operation Enduring Freedom and Afghanistan. The wing provides air traffic control services for Palm Beach County Airport while also providing Basic Military Training (BMT) students with flights out of PBIG on special occasions such as National Eagle Day or Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Today, there are over 1,700 active duty USAF personnel stationed in Florida alone! The name "Apopka" means "place where the sweet potatoes grow." The town was first settled by pioneers in 1837 and named for General George Armstrong Custer who fought during the Mexican-American War. The citrus industry played an important role in Apopka's development and retains much of its heritage today. Today, Apopka is home to many businesses including two supermarkets and several restaurants as well as a number of smaller stores and schools. Because of its close proximity to Miami, it has become known as a center for business travel and international trade. Apopka also provides excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation including hunting, fishing, boating, hiking/hiking trails, golfing and soccer (soccer). There are several parks that provide access to both recreational activities and fine dining options such as Jardin Botanique Park which contains over 125 different types of plants and trees; Pine Lakes Regional Park offers beacheside paddling with launch ramps for canoes/kayaks; Volcanoes National Monument features breathtaking hikes that take in views of 3 volcanoes - Mount Stromberge (4), Mauna Loa (9)and Kilauea (10)? It should be noted that while there are plenty of attractions within Apopka's borders that tourists can visit without spending any time hereabouts - there are also plenty of things to do if visitors make the trek from Miami or nearby towns like Pembroke Pines or Coral Gables - all within easy reach by car or public transportation.

Apopka, Florida is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Apopka post office was established on December 12, 1892 and closed on July 20, 1958. Apopka was founded by Germans who landed in what is now Polk County in 1853. The name means "place where blueberries grow." The town's first school opened in 1854 and it served students from apopka village as well as neighboring communities such as Sanford and Kissimmee. In 1865, the county seat of Polk County was moved to Apopka from Sanford due to competition from Jacksonville for land east of I-4. By 1870, apopka had a hotel, grocery store, lumberyard and four churches: Evangelical Lutheran (1871), Methodist Episcopal (1872), Presbyterian (1873) and Baptist (1875). Businesses grew until the Panic of 1893 which caused a decline in trade around that time. In 1901 apopkans voted to secede from Polk County and become their own municipality with its own government under the leadership of Drago Ziegler Jr., president of the Polk County Agricultural Society; this action set off a series of riots throughout north central Florida over local control during which some $5 million worth of property were destroyed or looted before order could be restored by military intervention led by General Winfield Scott Hancock. Apopka's annexation into Sanford followed its incorporation into Sanford on November 4 1897 when term limits prevented incumbent Mayor James Haggerty from running for reelection twice due to his house being located within Apopkas borders at 141st Avenue Northeast and Kirkland Road Southeast. A new courthouse/town hall was built near present-day US Highway 192 south of town square starting in 1907 but it burned down in 1935 while under construction after several fires broke out inside it including one that destroyed an entire block along SR 192 just outside town limits! After World War II there continued growth with many businesses opening up due to postwar boom times especially truck stop conversions like those found at Sawgrass Expressway north of town Square beginning around 1948 although much rural character still persists today with few places having more than 10% Hispanic or Latino residents according as compared to total population percentage
The town of Apopka, Florida was founded by a group of Seminole Indians in 1835. The town developed as a farming community and later became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1945, Apopka became part of the United States after World War II.
