Apopka, Florida is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on State Road 7 near Boca Raton and Apopka. The town of Apopka was founded in 1894 by George Applegate and James Capps as an Agricultural settlement. In 1911, it became a city under the name of Apopka; however, it reverted to its original name in 1933 when it merged with neighbouring communities of Cutler and Miramar. The townsite had a population of 12 residents at the time of its incorporation into Miami-Dade County. In 1951, the county moved all its offices from Apopka to Coral Gables; however, they continued to maintain some contact with the community through events and honorary memberships until 1986 when all county offices were relocated back to Apopka except for appellate courts which still reside in Coral Gables. In 1969 Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of downtown Apopka (the only building not damaged by Hurricane Andrew), leaving much of the infrastructure behind as well as most businesses out of business for over two years while restoration began. Two years later Hurricane Lucy destroyed much more than that - everything from homes to churches - but little else happened until 1974 when a new storm surge protection system was installed which preserved downtown for almost a year before finally allowing business reopening during that same year's Christmas season. Since then things have been slowly improving although there are still some issues such as inadequate funding forstorm damage repairs which have caused many properties such as schools and clinics to go unrepairable or even uninhabitable since they are required by state law; this has led to protests and boycotts against apopkafloridagov by groups like Amnesty International who argue that these buildings should be repairable given their historical value but which have so far failed to gain any significant ground despite numerous ceasefires between protestors and local officials). However, overall things look good enough that proponents feel that annexation would be appropriate considering how rapidly progress has been made since then - although no definitive answer has yet been announced given how much opposition there will likely be given how quickly central government can move resources elsewhere without warning if necessary).
On November 3, 1959, Apopka was officially incorporated as a city by the Florida Legislature. The city's first mayor and first City Council were elected on that date. In 1960, the Apopka Civic Center was built and it is currently used as the Mayor's Office and City Hall. In 1966, Apopka annexed part of Clearwater to create a new city. In 1970, Apopka became an all-weather sports town when they added football to their programming. That same year saw the opening of the First National Bank in town. In 1975, construction began on what would become known as "The Park" in downtownApopka which would eventually house both the Apopka Recreation Commission Building and the current Municipal Stadium.
