In 1969-1970 (the year after psychologist Leon Festinger published his article "The Role of Explanatory 8th Dimension Minds" which argued that humans do not rely on visual or auditory information while making decisions), development began for what would become known as Crystal Palace Park Drive which would eventually become Apopka's main thoroughfare connecting all of the community's businesses and residences. This redevelopment included construction ofCrystal Palace Park Elementary School (opened in 1971),Crystal Palace Park Middle School (opened in 1973),Crystal Palace Park High School (opened 1975),and Crystal Palace ParkCommunity Center (opened 1990). Apopka, Florida is an unincorporated community in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 914 as of the 2010 census. It is located along State Road 20 east of Apopka and west of Flagler Beach. The first inhabitants of this area were the Timucua Indians who lived in central Florida before moving south to what is now Sarasota County in 1775. In 1821, a party led by Captain John Wesley Powell passed through this area on their way to explore the great American region. They discovered gold mines in Cimarron Hills and named the areas they had explored "Apopka" after one of their leaders, Colonel James Wainwright. In 1892, Apopka became part of Lake Worth Township which was organized from parts of Dade and Miami Counties. In 1907 the township was divided into two portions again when it became part of Seminole County which included Fort Meyers Island; however, both townships remain together today as Apopka-Lake Worth Borough Council District No. 1 (and are also known colloquially as "the twin towns"). On November 3rd 1993, Apopka's incorporation as a city was established by ordinance by then Mayor Maudie McLaughlin with support from then Governor Lawton Chiles and City Councilman Bob Daniels Sr.. The first mayor was Cecil Jaffe who served for three terms until his retirement effective December 10th 1997; he was succeeded by his son Cecil Jaffe Jr., who served until May 5th 2003 when he resigned effective due to term limits set by Mayor Maudie McLaughlin.
