Apopka, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Apopka post office has been in operation since 1892. The first settlers in what is now Apopka arrived in 1835 and formed a log cabin settlement on the banks of Okefenokee River near present-day Apopka. They were farmers and their homeschooled children taught by Mrs. Ainsworth from nearby Marianna until around 1840 when she moved to Tallahassee to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law who had founded that city. Mrs Ainsworth's husband died young and she raised her five daughters there with help from her mother-in-law until 1850 when they all moved to Sanford which was then included within the present day Apopka township boundaries. In 1852 Gadsden Purchase bought 3,000 acres (1 km²) of land west of Sanford for $10 per acre (4,000 kg/ha). At this time mangrove swamp became an important natural resource as well as open swamp for hunting and fishing areas where cotton could be grown later on during the 19th century. By 1870 some 400 people lived in or near Sanford with about 100 residents working on farms including raising hogs, cattle and pigs; processing timber; manufacturing shoes, hats and other products; water filtration plants for agriculture; tanning hides; stock feeders; etc.; generating electricity by burning coal tarred oil along with various steam engine types used for transportation such as wagons drawn by horses or mules or carts pulled by motor vehicles such as buggies or bicycles
Apopka was founded in 1887 by George A. Smith, a man from Miamisburg, Ohio. The first post office in Apopka opened in 1888. In 1907, the town became a city andapopka was named one of the "20 Most Significant Cities in Florida" by the Florida Press Association. In 1921, Apopka became part of the new state of Florida and it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it joined the city of Apopka. Today, Apopka is a bedroom community located near Kissimmee and Ocala with more than 12,000 residents. It is home to three hospitals- Hospital for Children (HC), Regional Medical Center (RMC) and Orlando Health- as well as two shopping malls- Central Mall & Bayfront Park Shopping Center and North Mall.
