In the early 1800s, Atlantic Beach was a small fishing village located on the mouth of the St. Johns River. The community was named after the Asiatic elephant that once grazed in the area. In 1881, Atlantic Beach became a town and it has been growing ever since. The first settler in Atlantic Beach was James Ahern who purchased land from John Jacob Astor in 1821. Ahern built a log cabin and started to grow crops. By 1830, there were five homes in Atlantic Beach. The townspeople erected a toll road to collect revenue from drivers crossing the river. As time went on, more people moved intoAtlanticBeach and development increased significantly. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in the town of AtlanticBeach . In 1885, an international exposition was held at Jacksonville and much interest was aroused by it in Florida for tourism reasons alone; however, nothing came of it until 1895 when preparations began for what would become known as "The Panama-Pacific Exposition". This exposition included three days of activity at which 3 million visitors visited Jacksonville including 2 million Americans who traveled to see its exhibits By 1907, almost all businesses had closed down due to high rates of taxation levied by local government officials eager to make money off of tourists visiting their community during what amounted to little more than a promotional event for an agricultural center being developed adjacent to FortJackson Army Barracks on Duval Street near present-day State Road 455A (now Hogan Drive). After two years of negotiations between city commissioners and state legislators under then-Governor Billy Hughes (the only Democrat serving statewide at that time), $2 million had been raised by November 1st making possible construction of both fortifications which would have acted as barriers against potential threats emanating from abroad should America be involved in World War I before it was completed – this event is generally considered as marking Jacksonville’s entry into worldliness with regards to its newfound ability to attract multinational corporations such as assembly lines manufacturing munitions for war effort becoming increasingly important during this time period
