The Atlantic Beach community is located on the corner of Airline Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard in downtown Fort Myers, Florida. The community was first established in the early 1920s as a small fishing village. In 1941, the United States Coast Guard erected a weather station at Atlantic Beach to measure weather conditions along the Gulf of Mexico. The community soon became known for its beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear waters. In 1954, the town of Fort Myers annexed Atlantic Beach and many of its residents moved into new homes that were built on land belonging to the Coast Guard Station at Atlantic Beach. The station was eventually sold to KFC who maintained it until 1984 when it closed down due to budget cuts. Today, part of the property remains undeveloped and is used as an overflow lot for nearby KFC restaurants. In recent years, much development has occurred in both Atlantic Beach and Fort Myers with new businesses opening up and old ones being renovated or replaced. Many local schools have been built or are in process of being built including: Saint Johns Catholic School, Stonington Elementary School, Fort Myers High School, Aquarium Park Middle/High School, SouthFort Myers High School and now DowntownFortMyersMulti-Use Center which will serve as both a public library and child care center With so much happening within just a few blocks of where you live there's no time like now to learn about some of history's most significant events/people that lived or died here! Atlantic Beach residents were first organized by Captain John Soward during his survey work around 1825-1828 while he was stationed off shore at Santa Rosa Island[1]. He named his island after himself - "Island Brethren" simply because he had gathered together people from various colonies living around San Diego County[2]. Captain Soward also laid out streets within what is now known as "Atlantic Beach." At this point there were only several dwellings scattered around what is now downtown Ft Myers with only two boats moored onshore - one belonging to Capt John Fenton (the father-in-law of future Mayor David Lloyd) his wife Elizabeth & their servant Maria Govett using Pigeon Point [3][4] For those reasons we can say that early settlers at "Atlantic Beach" would be considered fishermen not farmers!
