Atlantic Beach is located inBrevard County, Florida and is a small town of about 7,000 residents. The beach is known for its white sand beaches and crystal-clear water. It was once the home of Atlantic City and has been called the "jewel of Brevard County." The first Europeans to arrive in Brevard County were Portuguese sailors who sailed along the coast from India in 1513. They named this area "Achaia" after their own homeland. The English explorer John Hawkins discovered what is now Atlantic Beach on July 11, 1609 while exploring Pensacola Bay. He named it after Captain James Cook's ship, the Resolution, which had been lost at sea two weeks earlier off Cape Lookout. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1851 when J.B. Lovett purchased land from the Choctaws on Isla de Cuba for $1 per acre. Lovett built a house on what is now Main Street and named it "Lovett's Bluff." By 1853, he had additionnl homes erected including one on Broadwalk that still stands today. In 1892, Lovett donated 5 acres of his land to Brevard County for a county fairgrounds which are now known as Atlantic Beach State Park . In 1902, he donated an additional 10 acres to Brevard County for a park system that includes present day Atlantic Beach State Park as well as North Shore Road and South Shore Road . During World War II , many people worked at Naval Base Miami which was adjacent to present day Atlantic Beach State Park . More than 50 thousand workers resided at Naval Base Miami during World War II Approximately 60% of all jobs created here were within the military/marine command support function . This gave rise to one song by Ray Charles entitled "Naval Station Miami" which went into heavy rotation on Armed Forces Radio (AFR) during World War II ; it has also become popularly known as "Ray Charles' Fort Lauderdale ." After World War II ended, most naval base personnel left or were transferred elsewhere; however some stayed until their retirement in 1987 . Many local businesses flourished during this time including AFR station KXLY-TV whose transmitter was located just east of where Main Street meetsBroadwalk Avenue; KXLY-AM also aired live coverage of numerous events throughout the year from various locations along Broadwalk Avenue
