Atlantic Beach is a secluded beach located on the Gulf of Mexico in Pinellas County, Florida. The town was founded in 1887 by Scots-Irish immigrants and became a popular tourist destination for retirees during the 1920s and 1930s. Atlantic Beach is now considered a retirement community with over 1,500 residents. The town was originally called "Beach Haven" because it was the only spot on the mainland that could be reached by boat from St. Petersburg. By 1890, most of the Irish immigrants had left and the town was renamed Atlantic Beach after its location on an island in Tampa Bay. The name stuck and is still used today to describe Atlantic Beach as well as nearby Clearwater, Florida which shares its ZIP code. During World War II, many American soldiers who were stationed at Camp Beaulieu near Clearwater garrisoned their units at Atlantic Beach because there were no other spots available on St. Petersburg's west side where they could live and train while war raged outside. The troops also used the beach for swimming and fishing when they couldn't come ashore due to enemy action or weather conditions ashore. In recent years, some residents have started to argue that Atlantic Beach should be re-named "Clearwater" because that's what it really looks like from shoreline level: clear freshwater sea with white sand beaches extending out into it - not blackish brown sandbar beaches filled with seaweed! However, this change has met staunch opposition from local businesses who consider "Atlantic" their unofficial name among their customers/workers (some may even call themselves simply "Beach Boys"). In any case...the old name will stay until somebody changes it again!
The first Europeans to set foot on the Florida peninsula were the Spanish in 1513. In 1821, the United States acquired Florida from Spain for $10,000 and named it after President James K. Polk. The state was admitted to the Union as a U.S. state on February 14, 1845. The Tampa Bay area was founded by Captain John Stelter in 1795 as a salt works and trading post on what is now Hillsborough County; he named it Tampa Bay because of the abundance of salt water nearshore. In 1898, TampaBay became part of St Petersburg when that city was created from parts of Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties east of Clearwater Beach
