The town's first lighthouse was built in 1823 and served as an important navigational tool for both ships and residents. In 1865, when Captain James Cook discovered Florida, the area that now includes Atlantic Beach was part of his vessel HMS Beagle. As he sailed through the area, he noted that there were no active naval forces on site to greet him. This led to the development of what is now called "Navy Station" in Atlantic Beach - where sailors from all over South America came to train and learn about American Navy tactics and procedures. Today, it is still considered one of the most important naval installations in SouthwestFlorida - home to both Fleet Marine Force Command (FMFC) Headquarters and Naval Air Station Miramar - responsible for training more than 50% of US military personnel afloat. In addition, NAS Miramar hosts more than 20 ballistic missile submarines, making it one of the most important nuclear weapons sites in the country! In 1868, three brothers, J.M., P.J., and M.L., bought land from the Menendez Brothers and started farming it. The name "Atlantic Beach" was given to the beach by Capt. John Denny in 1883 when he saw a group of dolphins swimming near shore.
