In 1960, Atlantic Beach voters approved a $5 million bond issue to update local roads and build new public buildings such as a library and community center. The townsfolk were so impressed with this investment that they kept voting for bonds even when interest rates went up during the Vietnam War. When prices for ocean seafood plummeted during the early 1970s recession, many people left Atlantic Beach for better opportunities inland; however, many remain proud of their hometown's unifying spirit through these tough times. They were led by Captain John Waddell and his son William Gist Waddell who named their new settlement after their father's native country - Ireland - but they were quickly replaced by Spanish immigrants. By 1915, there were over 100 residents living in what is nowAtlanticBeach. Over time, businesses started to emerge around Key West Naval Base which made life more difficult for local fishermen who could not rely on supplies coming from longitude-abandoned Isla de la Juventud (Island of Youth). In 1926, Hurricane Agnes destroyed part of key barrier island called Isla de la Juventud which left much of central Havana without power or water; this event was known as "the Great Strike" because so many jobs went out with it. Prior to that hurricane, no one really knew what caused these storm surges; some attributed them to natural phenomena such as hurricanes or typhoons but no one could say for certain why these waves came ashore at such high tide levels all across Cuba at different times during different seasons/years. However following Hurricane Agnes there was suddenly newfound interest in studying storm surges due to their potential impact on infrastructure like bridges and homes etc.; therefore teams from both National laboratories set up shop along with representatives from insurance companies trying to understand how Storm Surge events might cause property damage etc.. With research finally underway into understandingstorm surge events becoming increasingly common throughout Cuba starting with Hurricane Gloria in 1936 some people began calling what we know today as "AtlanticBeach". This name stuck because it accurately describes everything that used to be there except for a few houses sitting atop ancient coral reefs; while everyone else has moved on since then things have barely changed at all... well sortof...
