AUBURNDALE, FLORIDA - Town of Auburndale was founded in 1892 by John P. Auburndale and his wife Eliza. The town is located on the Apalachicola River, east of Tallahassee and west of Gainesville. The population of the town was 1,812 at the 2000 census. In 2006, Auburndale was one of two towns in Florida to be merged into Gainesville. Auburndale is home to a small shopping center and a few restaurants. It also has a post office and several churches including First Baptist Church which is the only church in town with a pulpit. The mayor is Bob Barber who also serves as treasurer for the town government. The first school in town was built in 1892 by Drs. James Hargrave and George Stephenson from Athens, Georgia. A new school building was erected in 1906 by Jno Wray and it served as the original high school until 1932 when it became known as the Junior High School for Girls which remains today as the primary public education facility for both boys and girls throughouttown government services are provided through three elementary schools (grades pre-K-6), three middle schools (grades 7-12), one high school (grades 11-12)and two adult day care centers(for ages 6 months to 54 years).
