The history of the Air Force in Auburndale, Florida dates back to World War II. The first planes were flown by American airmen from Fort Myers, Florida during the war. After the war, the Air Force was created and started training new pilots and flying missions into North Korea. Auburndale AFB was constructed in 1951. It served as a base for fighter, bomber and transport aircraft during the Cold War. In 2002, it was closed down and all of its equipment moved to Homestead AFB in Florida. Today, the Air Force presence in Auburndale is very limited due to budget cuts. Auburndale is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. It is the largest community in Escambia County and its population was 9,813 at the 2000 census. The name Auburndale comes from the French word "Auberge" meaning hospitable inn. The town's first post office opened in 1892. In 1927, Auburndale became one of two communities in Escambia County to be incorporated as a municipality. In 1959, Auburndale annexed a part of Indian Harbour Beach and formed an unincorporated community called Indian Harbour Beach II. The town was founded on December 3rd 1892 by pioneers who had come from Mobile Bayou country near Pensacola after hearing about land grants for white people near this point that were being offered by Governor John Crain of Florida. They built their first house on what is now Main Street and named it "Auberge du Village". This early settlement grew slowly due to lack of water supply, sparse population, and difficult terrain but when the railroad came through town in 1901 business picked up quickly because many farmers needed transportation to sell their produce to markets farther away. By 1910 there were over 100 homes with six churches and four schools located throughout Town Square including Our Lady Of The Lake Catholic Church which is still standing today. “In all probability it will take quite some time before we get any real definite idea as to how much development there really exists hereabouts... until then things are just kind of growing around us like mushrooms." - Mayor A W Kipperley circa 1917 It wasn't until 1925 when Auburndale annexed part of Indian Harbour Beach that the true growth began for the town as businesses started opening up along US 1 between Main Street and State Road 821 giving residents access to jobs not only outside the limits of Town square but also closer to home making life easier for everyone involved with economic development withintown limits during this early stage of growth. Today Auburndale has 10 churches (5 Catholic) 5 public schools (3 Elementary/2 High Schools), 2 banks (First National Bank & Trust Company & Community National Bank) 2 hospitals- St John's Medical Center & Baptist Children's Hospital (opened in 1984), almost 50 businesses including restaurants, shopping malls, medical centers and more! With so many businesses open up shop now days why would anyone stay? Well you could say that because living here feels very comfortable despite having some unusual quirks such as no streetlights at night or limited cell phone service
The United States Air Force has a rich airforce gift history. The USAF was founded in 1947 and the First World War ended with the armistice of 1918. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created theAAF, which served as America's first aerial warfare service. TheAAF became operational in December 1942 and participated in three world wars before being disbanded in 1945. In 1947, Congress passed the National Security Act and authorized the USAF to create Gift Programs to recognize members of the USAF who had rendered distinguished services. These programs included Awards for Valor (AWARDS-V), Presidential Unit Citation (PUC), General Service Medal (GSM), Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and Meritorious Unit Citation (MUC). Awards for Valor were given to pilots who had engaged in combat while flying Forrester Brothers F4U Corsair fighters or North American P-51 Mustangs against enemy forces during the Second World War or during any other time period where heroism was demonstrated. AWARDS-V were awarded to officers who had flown more than fifty missions as a pilot on an A-7E Skymaster aircraft alone or co-pilot during combat operations over Japan when that type of aircraft was available. GSM was given to officers who received five consecutive awards of Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). DFC was earned by officers who flew two hours or more on active duty with one squadron while participating in aerial combat within one hundred miles of a major city or metropolitan area at any time between 1 October 1939 and 31 August 1945 inclusive.
