In 1836, the area that is now Auburndale was part of what is now Putnam County. The first known settler in the area was James Ladd, who built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the Miami River in 1837. By 1840, there were six dwellings and two stores in the town. In 1848, Auburndale was platted as a village by Elijah Holmes and Wm. H. Cline and named for Major-General David Auburndale, an Englishman who had fought in North America during the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in 1850. The town grew rapidly with population reaching 100 by 1860; however, it declined during the Civil War because of heavy military deployment around Putnam County. It reemerged following World War II as a small community with a population of around 50 people until it all but disappeared after the 1994 Census when its population was only 15 people
