At that time, it was part of the United States Navy and the Coast Guard had a limited capability. In 1928, however, Congress authorized the creation of a Coast Guard Station in Auburndale to serve as an interim facility until a permanent station could be erected. In 1930, a new lighthouse was built at Fort Myers Beach and the mission of the Coast Guard Station changed from providing security for navigation on the Florida Keys to protecting shipping along South America's Atlantic coast. On July 1, 1935, Lt. John Fenton became Commandant of the Coast Guards at Auburndale and directed all activities at the station including its operation as a naval auxiliary. In 1952, with Coxswain Leroy Aiken becoming Commandant of both stations simultaneously and with more resources available due to growing international tensions caused by Cold War competition between nationside differences over fishing rights off America's east coast - including claims by Canada - Headquarters moved from Ft Myers Beach to Jacksonville which would become their permanent home. In 1969 when Hurricane Andrew struck landfall causing extensive damage along much of Central America - especially Panama City - Headquarters relocated again but this time to Miami which would remain their primary headquarters until 1993 when they moved permanently ashore at Apollo Bay Naval Base in Port Everglades after experiencing major problems with flooding during Hurricane Wilma which struck near Cutler Bay Marina years earlier (see below).

Auburndale is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by Captain Jameson Auburndale and his family. The name of the town comes from the French word "auburn" which means mixed hardwood tree. The first post office in Auburndale was established in 1840. In 1847, Captain Jameson Auburndale donated land to build a school and church on it. The first building was completed in 1850 and named after him, the Captain's Chapel. After his death in 1851, the town passed through several changes until becoming what it is today with its own government and schools system in 1907. Auburndale has been rated one of America's most "reathless" small towns according to Forbes Magazine for its vibrant cultural scene that includes art galleries and performance venues as well as wide-ranging shopping opportunities for people of all ages along with dozens of restaurants including some located inside the old post office buildings still standing today!
Auburndale was first settled in 1836 by two brothers, John and James Auburndale. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson, who had donated land to the town. In 1848, the town passed a referendum to secede from Polk County. The vote was 2-1 in favor of secession and the town established itself as an independent municipality. In 1863, Auburndale became part of Jacksonville County.
