In 1925, Fort Meade bought 640 acres (252 ha) near present day Auburndale from John Witherspoon for $1 million dollars making it one of the largest ever purchased by the military for use as a base campground or training ground during World War II. With this purchase came many jobs for local residents including construction workers at nearby Fort Myers Army Base during World War II; truck drivers servicing military bases all over South Florida during that era; as well as soldiers assigned to provide guard duty around various government installations across South Florida during those years; these troops also used the campgrounds for their barracks while stationed hereabouts.
