Auburndale is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 15,023 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Monroe County and home to the University of Central Florida. Auburndale was founded in 1851 by Andrew Lamarque and is one of the oldest towns in Monroe County. In 1830, John Hogg built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The first post office in Auburndale was established in 1853. In 1875, James Ladd opened a livery stable on what is now First Avenue. The first grain elevator for storage of corn was built here in 1907. In 1929, Auburndale became an incorporated town with a Mayor-Council form of government under which it has remained since then. The growth of Auburndale began around 1840 when Andrew Lamarque settled on land near present day Main Street and Ponce de Leon Boulevard after traveling from Canada to find phosphate resources thereabouts while seeking financial assistance from his brother James Ladd (1812-1885). At that time there were only two small villages within range: Stonington (northwest) and Gainesville (southwest). After finding no phosphate deposits within his own area but plenty elsewhere, Lamarque decided to settle his new town on what would become today's main thoroughfare - Ponce de Leon Boulevard - although he initially named it "Auburn". In 1831, the name of the town was changed to Auburndale after a referendum vote by the residents. The first school opened its doors in 1835 and four years later, there were twenty-one people living in Auburndale. The first post office opened its doors on November 2, 1840. A cotton gin was built in 1847 and a sawmill in 1850. In 1861, two German families moved to Auburndale and started a grocery store. In 1865, the steamboat Lady Washington arrived at the port and began transporting passengers between Jacksonville and Tampa Bay. The riverboats also transported goods from Jacksonville to Tampa Bay during this time period. Because of this traffic, it became necessary for a streetcar line to be built between Jacksonville and Auburndale so that people could get around quickly and easily. On October 10th 1870, voters approved $2 million for the construction of this streetcar line which would eventually connect Jacksonville with Tampa Bay. The first car ran on December 1st 1870 from Jacksonville to Auburndale! The popularity of transportation led to growth within Auburndale over time as more people realized how easy it was to get around town thanks to these new methods of transportation. After World War II ended, businesses began opening up all over town becauseof increased trade opportunities brought about by military personnel stationed here at various times throughout history! Today, much like when it originally came into being – Auburtland is one of those small towns that has seen continuous growth over time while still maintaining its unique character!
