In 1807 Mortimer Wheeler founded Wheeler's Store here with storerooms on both sides of Sunrise Boulevard now home to various businesses including Evelyn's Hair salon and Lighthouse Pizza. In 1894 saw its first post office opened when Drury Lane Post Office moved from nearby West Kendall to what is now downtown Auburndale for reasons unknown but likely due to growth in real estate development in that area at that time as well as new transportation connections available through US 1 (now Broward Blvd.). In 1915 during World War I an American military barracks was built adjacent to Belleair Drive; this barracks became known as Camp David which served as headquarters for Allied forces fighting in Europe during World War I. On January 14, 1931 a tornado struck downtown Auburndale killing one person and injuring dozens more before dissipating over rural areas near Homestead just outside Miami Gardens minutes later becoming one of Florida's most destructive tornadoes ever with damage reported totals amounting $15 million In 1966 when US 1 was widened into its current routing hemlock trees were removed from much of Downtown Auburndales central business district making way for new high rises developments resulting in increased traffic congestion around old commercial corridors such as State Road 98 (now First Avenue) while also reducing access opportunities off US 1 between 2200 Southbound Main Street and 6000 Northbound Main Street creating gridlock typical during rush hour hours especially within walking distance of commercial districts including Old Town Commercial District which lost access off main street leading directly into University Park Shopping Center providing shoppers with only two blocks shopping options withoutrush hour traffic jamming

Auburndale is a town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Auburndale was founded in 1851 as a small village on what is now Auburndale Boulevard by farmers looking for a new home after moving from their original settlement in Hillsborough County. The first post office was established in 1852 and the first store opened in 1854. In 1875, Auburndale became an incorporated community with a school and market place. A railroad station was built there in 1896 and it served as the terminus of the Tampa-Dade Railroad until 1959. After that it was used as a stop for buses and trucks before becoming its own town again when the railroad line was reactivated in 1984 As one of several villages developed around St Petersburg during its early years, Auburndale had unique architecture including two churches – Episcopal (1857) and Methodist (1868). The Elmira School District closed its doors for good on September 15, 1978 due to low enrollment; however, many students who were transfers from other schools within district were able to continue attending classes through bus service until January 1979.
