Auburndale is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Auburndale is located on US 441 east of I-10 and north of US 98. The first human beings to live in what is now Auburndale were French traders who came there in 1763 for trade with the Seminole Indians. The town was named after General James Wilkinson's wife, Augusta (née Auburndale). In 1836, when US 1 was routed through the area as part of the Second Seminole War and Jacksonville became an independent city, Auburndale's merchants formed a group to urge Congress to reroute US 1 so that it would not pass through their town. Their efforts led to the opening of state Route 99E in 1926 which cut off most travel between Jacksonville and Pensacola from that time until today. In 1942 during World War II, PFC Clifford "Hoppy" Hebard enlisted in the United States Army Supply Corps while living in nearby Winter Haven and died as a result of injuries sustained when his unit participated in an amphibious landing on Guadalcanal on November 10th 1941 during Operation Bushido which marked Japan's invasion of Pearl Harbor; he remains one of only two U.S military personnel ever officially honored with posthumous Army Commendation Medal for heroism (the other being CO Kenichi Kawaoka) due to his death at age 21 years old some 33 years after his discharge from service! On July 15th 2006 local citizen Gary "Gabby" Henson had her flag flown at half mast over City Hall Square after having placed it there 9 months earlier as a tribute to Hoppy Hebard following his funeral services presided over by Lt Col Joe McGinness USAFRet & Commander Coast Guard Air Station Fort Myers FL...Hoppy was posthumously awarded Miami-Dade County Commendation Medal presented by Mayor Carlos Gimenez on October 11th 2006...On May 5th 2009 local resident David Jaffe erected a memorial stone dedicated to Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Kyle Kimball who died aboard USS John F Kennedy During Operations Neptune’s Spear January 25-27 2009 off coast Yemen.. Kimball had been serving as Chaplain aboard JFK when he fell overboard during combat operations.. Auburn Drive Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979
