The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Project was founded in 1990 as a way to improve the relationship between Marines and their families during deployments. The project is composed of photos, stories, and objects that reflect the history of Marines and their gifts to those who have served with them. Auburndale, Florida is home to the world’s largest Marine Corps Recruit Depot. This facility has been a mainstay in Marine Corps history since it opened in 1917. It houses both National Guard and active duty Marines from all over the United States. In addition to its role as a recruitment ground, the depot also plays an important role in the training of future Marines. Since its inception, the depot has given away more than 1 million items to servicemen and women from all over America. Some of these items include clothing, toys, house pets, bicycles, fishing equipment, car models, and even cutlery! Many donations are unique enough to be passed down through generations. Auburndale, Florida is a small town located in Martin County, Florida. The population was 2,658 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1868 by J. Auburndale and his family. The community became an incorporated municipality in 1907. In 1960, Auburndale had a population of 3,569 residents and it is now a part of Orlando. The town got its start as a farming community on the banks of the Olustee River. By 1868, J. Auburndale had moved his family to this area from Kentucky because he found it easier to farm here than in Kentucky where the climate was too hot and humid for farming purposes. Auburndale developed a prosperous agricultural business that generated income for the town until World War II when the war caused production to drop off significantly due to decreased demand from overseas markets after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941). In 1957, Jules Auchincloss purchased land east of town along State Road 474 which he turned into what is now called Parkland Hospital Campus which opened its doors on October 21st 1959 with five beds and served as an educational resource for local students before becoming home to Glenda Jackson’s hospital starting in 1984 when she took over as CEO of Palm Beach County Hospital District #4 (now Jupiter Health Care Corporation). As part of their large expansion plans following Hurricane Andrew’sricane force damage in 1992-1993, City Hall constructed two new buildings adjacent to each other on Sunrise Boulevard between First Street South and Second Street North – these are now known as the Mayor’s Office Building and Conference Room Building respectively. Today, Auburndale has a vibrant cultural life with many events taking place throughout the year including art shows/festivals/movies/theatre performances etc., making it one of the most popular communities in Central Florida!
Auburndale was founded in 1868 by Captain John Auburndale. The town was named for Lieutenant Colonel James A. Auburndale, who had served with the U.S. Army in the Mexican-American War and in the Seminole Wars. In 1869, Captain Auburndale donated land to build a school and store complex. The first school building was erected on the present site of the County Courthouse in 1870. The first business opened at the store in 1871. In 1886, Captain Auburndale donated land for a new courthouse and jail. The cornerstone was laid on October 17, 1886, and construction began soon afterwards. The new courthouse was completed in 1889 and seated 100 people. It is one of Florida's oldest courthouses still standing today. The town experienced some growth during World War II; after America entered World War II, many citizens volunteered their time to serve in the military or work on war production plants overseas. Postwar development slowed down until the late 1960s when demand for housing started to increase once again; however, growth has resumed recently with population increases caused by newcomers as well as retirees living nearby
