Auburndale also saw its first peacetime occupation when US Marines landed at Kings Bay on October 3, 1898 to take possession of Cuba following Spain's defeat at Saragossa naval base during Operation Haymarket. Auburndale experienced its most involvement with warfare when it became part of Florida Command during World War II which resulted from America's entry into World War I. During World War II, Auburndale fielded units including: infantry (the 1st Battalion), cavalry (1st Squadron), artillery (4th Battalion), tank battalion (2/5th Regiment), engineer battalion (3rd Regiment) and ambulance platoon (2/8th Regiment).
Auburndale is a town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,842 at the 2000 census. Auburndale is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a small community of just over 100 residents in 1907 and grew rapidly during World War I when many soldiers who fought inEurope came to live and work in the area. The post office was established in 1914 and by 1922 there were over 150 residents living in Auburndale. The first school was built in 1915 and it served grades one through twelve until 1923 when an addition was built which included a high school and a library. The original store opened its doors on Main Street in 1917 and it continued to be active until it closed its doors in 1967. In 1925, the center of town was moved from east to west side of Main Street which helped increase business activity as people now had two destinations for their shopping needs. Auburndale's economy changed significantly during World War II when many businesses were destroyed or converted into military bases due to the war effort. Many locals decided to move away from town after the war ended but some remained behind to start new businesses such as a grocery store, mechanic shop, restaurant, hospital nursery/delivery service, pet supply store and more. In 1957, Auburndale lost its only church when Methodist Episcopal Church moved away from town because of budget cuts caused by federal government austerity measures known as "the Great Society". However, within five years another church had been established at what is now known as Old Town Square with help from local citizens who pooled their money together to buy land for the structure. In 1971, Auburndale annexed neighboring towns of Winter Garden and Dunedin which made it possible for them to have their own schools while still being part of Auburndale despite having different cultures and languages among their populations. In recent years there has been significant growth within the community with several new businesses opening up including an gymnasium/fitness center (2009), arts & crafts stores (2011), convenience store (2012) along with numerous homes being constructed that are becoming increasingly popular among locals as they offer starter homes that can be upgraded into full-time properties over time while still remaining affordable for those looking to purchase them outright or Rent them out short term
