Auburndale is located on State Road 98 and its ZIP code is 37012. Auburndale was platted in 1868 by J.M. Brownell and named for John Auburne, a settler who had come to Florida in 1837 from Scotland. In 1886, the name was changed to Auburn after Auchinleck Castle near Banff in Scotland which had been subject to American Indian raids during the mid- 19th century. In 1907, when US Route 98 was created as part of the state highway system, it ran through what is now Auburndale along its current alignment west of US Highway 92 (SR 98). The original routing of US98 east of today's town developed due to competition from development within mile radius of SR 98 and then later Romeoville Road (later Business UAH 95) also became available east of present day AubURNDALE for development in that area between SR 108 and SR 98 south of downtown (the old alignment remains largely unchanged today except for resurfacing around high schools). This led to what is now known as "The Great road swap" where SR 98 becomes BUS 508E just north of downtown before turning northwest towards downtown; meanwhile BUS 508 continues northeast across Clearwater Bay concurrent with I-75 until reaching exit 419B/SR 9N exit 219E at Hernando Beach Boulevard/SR 99W just south of today's community center; BUS 508 then turns southeast onto Hernando Beach Boulevard/US Highway 92 (and continued past today's center), while I-75 goes northward into Tampa Bay interior

Auburndale, Florida is a census-designated place in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. Auburndale is part of the Gainesville–Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Auburndale was founded in 1892 by Pascual and his brother José María de la Torre as a small summer home for sugarcane farmers on the edge of what is now Auburndale Lake. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on the railroad and agricultural markets. In 1905, Avila Brothers constructed a sawmill which continued to produce wood until 1957. In 1923, Auburndale became an incorporated city after voters approved an ordinance establishing it as a municipio under Spanish rule following World War I. It remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became part of Gainesville proper when that city was created from merging multiple smaller townships into one entity. The first post office opened in 1903 and closed in 1953; the last mailbag was delivered on July 15, 1959. The first telephone service arrived in 1928 with two lines connecting rural areas within three miles of town with downtown Gainsville; both services were discontinued by 1971 because of expenses associated with expanding telephone service nationwide.
