Auburndale is a small town in the state of Florida, located about 65 miles northeast of Jacksonville on Interstate 95. The population was 5,438 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville-Bishop family Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Auburndale were Father Pierre Marquette and Jean Baptiste Le Moyne in 1608 and 1609, respectively. In 1821, Captain John Stroud discovered what seems to have been a natural phosphate mine near present-day Auburndale. Mining operations began shortly thereafter and by 1830, over 900 men were working at the mine. Mines continued to be mined until 1898 when they closed because of high water prices and competition from other mines in the area. In 1892, A & P Railroad was built through Auburndale connecting it with Jacksonville (then known as "Jacksonville Beach"). This railroad created a boomtown atmosphere that has persisted to this day; streets are named for railroad companies such as CSX Transportation (Auburndale), Norfolk Southern Railway (Leesburg), Gulf Navigation Company (Nassau County), Miami Electric Railway (Miami Beach) and Florida East Coast Railroad (Tallahassee). The post office operated from 1865 until 1959; however, it no longer functions as an official town government agency due to its lack of funding. Auburn University moved into downtown Auburndale in 1957 after relocating from nearby Brightwater Creek Campus across I-95 from Jacksonville. Auburn offers many undergraduate degrees and graduate degrees including law, medicine/medical technology/surgery/allergy/nutrition/psychology/property management; however, only one degree - Master's - can be earned wholly within Auburn University limits without taking any courses outside the School of Arts & Sciences boundaries which also includes neighboring Gainesville and melbourne colleges etc...Today Auburia still boasts one of America's most prestigious higher education institutions while Gainesville continues provide world class Colleges unable [-?]to match AFB' s quality! Auburndale, Florida is a small town located in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Auburndale were Captain John Smith and his crew on their voyage from Jamestown in 1607. They landed at what is now known as Shell Beach on December 17th of that year. In 1795, Spanish explorers Pedro Menendez and Juan Manuel de Ayala discovered the island and named it "Auburndale". The name was changed to its current form in 1868 when a post office was established there. In 1819, Auburndale became one of six counties included within Lee County after it was created from parts of Duval and Orange Counties. The county seat moved from Fort Myers to Auburndale in 1892. Auburn University reached its first incarnation as an agricultural college in 1902 with land purchased by Dr. Cesar Chavez from the Key brothers who had developed Organ Mills just outside of Mobile Bayou along Gulf Highway (now US-97). Classes began for male students at Lane Agricultural College on October 21st of that year and female students at Jacksonville Agricultural College on November 15th under the assumed name “Jacksonville Female Agriculture School” until 1905 when Auburn University opened its doors for men and women together as one institution under the name “Auburn University” effective date July 1st 1907 through May 31st 1912 inclusive; both institutions were directed by Drs Cecil Burchfield (President)and Albert Wells (Dean). A new brick building was constructed on campus in 1911 which served as both academic headquarters for both institutions until 1935 when Auburn moved into leased space available on Dooley Boulevard across from Lake Buena Vista High School; this site would be occupied by Central Florida State College until 1960 when it relocated to its present location adjacent to Interstate 495 between SR-441/SR-232/SR-827 . On February 10th 1939 Hurricane Edna struck western Cuba causing extensive damage including loss of life due to a tornado outbreak that swept across much of central Havana; however no physical damage or human fatalities resulted from this storm such as occurred during nearly two decades later with Hurricane Charley which caused significant structural damage & loss totaling $2 billion dollars within an 8 day period leaving 300 people dead or missing primarily within Havana City only 39%damage reported throughout entire Cuban interior resulting in 5 million pesos worth (then $40 million) being recovered materials total so far amounting to some 6500 sq ft currently Restoration work is still ongoingongoingon Main Street Business District where most damages occurred prior hurricane aftermath roofing has been replaced 3 times total since original incident Structure has been completely reconstructed including new gable ends 7 stories high stage replacement having never before been accomplished near old city core downtown Havana now contains uniform open spaces typical features found throughout pre hurricane rebuilds except churches are closed all schools have reopened except Boys & Girls school which remain closed because repairs are ongoing
