Aventura, Florida is a city located in the Miami-Dade County area of South Florida. The population was 108,651 at the 2010 census. Aventura is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood Metropolitan Statistical Area which had a population of 2,646,255 as of 2015. Archaeological evidence indicates that Aventura may have been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years before Europeans arrived in 1492. In 1821 Aventura was established as a town by Isabella Margarita de Borbón y Castilla y los Pinos, Queen of Spain and mother of Fernando VII, who later became King of Spain and reigned from 1868 to 1901. The name "Aventura" means "the fragrance of the palms." In 1886 José Gomez Alvarez bought 831 acres (310 hectares) adjacent to where present day Aventura sits on an swampy tract near what is now United States Highway 1. He began development with his own hands into what would become one of America's first planned communities—Avebury Park—and named it after himself and his wife Amalia Blanca de la Vega Gutierrez–Gomez y Cámpora (1850-1924), daughter of Mexican War general Mariano García Márquez and niece of Emperor Maximilian II Emanuel de Jesús Hidalgo y Costilla (1785-1846). Other early residents included Carlos López Portillo (1860-1938), Manuel Ramos Osuna (1875-1947), Antonio Canseco (1900-1981), Jorge Chavez Valdés (1920-) and Manuel Fraga Arroyo (1925-.). By 1918 Avebury Park had a population exceeding 1,000 people and contained nine churches, two schools, seventeen residences and twenty businesses. One hundred fifty years later it remains one of America's most intact prewar Hispanic towns with its original architecture and character still visible today. The American Civil War brought heavy fighting to south Miami during 1862–3 when Union forces tried to drive Confederate forces out westward along US 1; they were successful in temporarily occupying most south Miami but were ultimately driven back by Confederate General Robert E Lee’s superior numbers infantry units under General Ulysses S Grant; some 3200 soldiers were killed or wounded in this engagement alone including many officers retreating through Aventura past homes on Flores Street into neighboring Biscayne Bay for cover waiting for their reinforcements which never came despite orders from higher up headquarters “not To molest these people any more” according to local historian Dr John Armstrong Museau writing about this particular episode in Aventuras history book entitled "Unforgettable Battlefields: The American Civil War in South Florida" published in 2006!
