The first U.S. Naval Station in the area was established here in 1847, and the present-day Naval Air Station at PortMiami opened in 1939. In 1967, NAS Aventura became part of the newly created Naval Forces Command, headquartered at Miami Beach. NAS Aventura has since become one of the most important naval installations on Florida's Gulf Coast. Aventura, Florida is a small town in Citrus County, Florida. The population was 5,856 at the 2000 census. Founded in 1912 by citrus growers from Cuba and West Palm Beach, Aventura quickly became a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful landscape and wide variety of cultural activities. In recent years, Aventura has become an increasingly popular retirement community for Floridians living near Tampa and Orlando. The original citrus crops in Citrus County were oranges and grapefruit. By 1912, however, the fruit industry had changed to include other crops such as apples and bananas. After years of growth and development, Aventura was incorporated as a city on November 2nd, 1932. With its growing population and burgeoning economy, Aventura soon became known as one of the most vibrant cities in Florida. In 1985-1986 Aventura experienced major destruction caused by Hurricane Andrew which destroyed many businesses including the old City Hall building which housed the city's library system and several restaurants/bars located on Pine Street between First Avenue North and Second Avenue North." According to historian John Hargrave: "The storm destroyed more than fifty businesses within two blocks of City Hall - some dating back to 1894 - displacing more than one thousand people...A total loss of $2 million was suffered". Today Aventura is still home to ample commerce with numerous stores located throughout downtown area along with several high-end restaurants including Joe's Crab Shack & Grill on State Road 8 about two miles east of downtown; The Finest Place Fitness Club across from Walmart; The Annexe restaurant located across from Midtown Plaza mall; La Romana grocery store; Tropicana casino hotel (now Marriott) which closed in 2009 after 33 years occupancy; Barnes & Noble bookstore closed down early 2008 but reopened in January 2009 under new management ownership; 'Downtown Development Corporation' or 'DDC', a municipally owned business that provides marketing services for downtown areas such as Main Street NE., Dixie Highway SW., US 27 Business Park NW., US Highway 1 Business Park SE.; both PGA courses – The Steeley Hills Golf Course off US 27 Business Park NW.; Turnpike service plaza operated by Penske Truck Rental inside Turnpike Authority Headquarters Complex behind toll booths northbound off I-275 southbound (exit 307); Pan American Health Arena / Miami University Hospital just south of I-275 exit 308; Kempinski Resort Hotel open since 1982 adjacent to Pan American Health Arena/Miami University Hospital;; Dollar General store located immediately north east of interchange featuring gasoline stations available 24 hours per day/.
