Aventura, Florida is a small city located in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area. As of the 2010 census, its population was 21,609. The town grew rapidly due to trade with Cuba and Venezuela and by 1750 had 1,500 residents. On January 10, 1838 Don José Antonio Fernández y Valdés purchased from Fernando López Gutiérrez all that remained of Avila del Rey for US$4200 including dwellings, slaves and two cannons. The new town was named after him: Don José Antonio Fernández y Valdés Townsite or simply Los Angeles (Los Angeles). When Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821–22, Los Angeles reverted back to Mexican control under President Agustín Lerdo de Tejada until it was ceded back to Spain at peace treaty signed December 14, 1848 by General Manuel Mariano Lopez Jiménez; thereafter it continued under Spanish rule until United States occupation during World War II led to its return to Mexican sovereignty effective February 26th 1945 pursuant to Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area that makes up Aventura was originally inhabited by Seminole people who migrated from South Florida in the 18th century. In 1835, Spanish explorers discovered what would become Aventura on November 12 when they landed at Pensacola Bay on their way to invade Cuba. They named it after Virgilio Aventuriano y Costilla, captain general of Spain's expedition to explore North America in 1795-96 as part of King Carlos III's reorganization of Hispanic society. The first permanent white settlers arrived around 1845 when John Crouse and his brother James moved from Fort Walton Beach Lagoon into present-day Santa Rosa County. By 1850 there were over 100 English-speaking families living here with primarily cotton production as their main industry. The first school was built in 1848 and served the community until 1860 when an academy was established for girls which lasted until 1865 when it became a high school teachng boys only.
