On December 8, 1948, airmen from Andrews Air Force Base gave a presentation to Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt at her presidential inauguration which included a model airplane and two sets of wings made from aluminum foil that had been designed and built by nine boys at Andrews AFB. This event marked the beginning of what would become an annual tradition for the USAF in presenting models to Mrs. Roosevelt on New Year's Day. In 1949, Mrs. Roosevelt presented General Curtis LeMay with a model airplane as part of his birthday celebration and also announced plans for an annualair show at Andrews AFB to be held on February 2nd each year thereafter which would celebrate America's aviation industry contribution to world peace and security during this time period known as "the Golden Age of Aviation." In 1951 President Harry Truman presented First Lieutenant John Glenn with his very own P-51 Mustang fighter plane for flying tests leading up to his spaceflight programme; this event signaled America's entry into Space Race with Russia which would culminate in World War III. From 1951-1954 gifts were given out annually throughout Thanksgiving weekend culminating with a formal dinner at Camp David on November 28th where Generals Eisenhower, MacArthur and Ridgway were honored with an aircraft display by the Chief Pilot Officers (CPOs) from Combat Units stationed overseas during that particular fiscal year -Operation Overlord being unique among military operations ever conducted!
Bartow is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Marquette metropolitan area. Bartow was founded by settlers in 1835 and named for General James Moultrie Bartow. The first post office in Bartow was established in 1836. In 1865,the town was moved to its present location on a tract of land that had been donated by Colonel John Crain. The first school in Bartow opened in 1837 and closed in 1941. The current elementary and high schools were built between 1959 and 1973, after which the community renovated and expanded its buildings including a library, fire department, police department, golf course and several churches. The economy of Bartow is based largely on agriculture with some light manufacturing (such as cigars) also occurring. There are two hospitals within the town: one operated by Baptist Health System and the other run by Osceola Regional Medical Centers.
