The history of the Bartow Army Base is long and rich. It has been a part of the Florida Military District since 1899, when it was established as Fort Sill in Bartow. The base served as an ammunition depot during World War I, and then housed the 1st Infantry Division from 1925 to 1941. After the war, the 1st Infantry Division was reassigned to Fort Polk in Louisiana, where it stayed until 1957. The division was then transferred back to Bartow and renamed 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (3/2) in 1978. In 2000, 3/2 relocated to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina after being disbanded at Fort Polk. Today, army troops stationed at Bartow includethe 9th Infantry Regiment (at Fort Myers), 12th Infantry Regiment (at Lake City), 7th Cavalry Battalion (based at Mabelvale), 2nd Squadron helicopter squadron (based at LeJeune Air Force Base), 5th Helicopter Squadron (based at Eglin Air Force Base), 4th Aviation Brigade Combat Team (4/1), and 2nd Civil Affairs Battalion (based at Fort Pickens).

The Bartow, Florida military district was activated on February 12, 1861 as the 1st Florida Infantry Regiment. On July 15, 1861, it was redesignated as the 2nd Florida Infantry Regiment and then the 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment. The regiment fought in the Civil War and lost its members to death or wounds. It disbanded on September 30, 1865.
Bartow is a small town in central Florida, located on the St. Johns River. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Bartow County. The town was founded in 1835 by James A. Bartow and became a state capital in 1907. It is named after General Andrew Jackson, who was president of the United States from 1828 to 1829 and who died in 1799 at age 82 years old. The first European settlers were Frenchmen who came to this area in 1606. They built Fort Caroline on an island near what is now Bartow. The British arrived about 1768 and began to build forts here until they withdrew from the area in 1800. Englishman John Hawkins established a trading post here in 1782 called Hawkins Station which served as both a military base and commercial center for much of the 19th century before it was abandoned due to its location on Indian Territory under Creek control at that time. In 1805, General James A. Bartow reactivated Hawkins Station as his new headquarters during his campaign against Santa Anna's Mexican army during the Mexican-American War (1846-1847). The station became known as Bartow because General James A. Bartow operated it. In 1835, Colonel James Mays purchased land east of what is now downtown Bartow from Richard Withers for $4,500 cash plus three slaves Fayetteville would purchase soon afterwards for $200 each ($10 per year). This grant included all or part of present-day downtown Bartholomew Street between West Main Street and Meridian Avenue; Strand Road between Park Row Avenue and East Main Street; parts of present-day Strand Drive (southwest corner), Old Spanish Trail (northwest corner), west portion of Nowhere Lane, northeast corner of Third Street Northeast (now Elm street), northwest corner of Fourth Street Northeast (now University Boulevard), southeast corner of FifthStreet Northeast (now Military Parkway); gardens extending along present day Broadway Avenue from Northwest corner Park Row Avenue to Southeast Corner park Row Ave., northwesterly boundary Elbow Road including part Oferta Drive; today's limits are: Northwest Corner Park Row Avenue - Southwest Corner Elm street - Northwest Corner Fourth street NE - Northeast Corner Fifthstreet NE - Southeast Corner ParkRow Ave.- Today's boundaries were set when these grants were made The town charter was adopted on July 5th, 1840 by Mayor Moses Hoggard with twenty-eight voting cast ballots with one abstention due to illness then Governor John Pendergrast ratified it two days later with only twelve votes cast against it despite protests from citizens not wanting their township divided into two counties like Jacksonville did Governor Polk used his power under the Florida Constitution 3rd Amendment Section 8(c) which allowed him create Polk County out of portions of Bay County which he had been appointed overseer for On November 15th 1840 Gov Phillips signed legislation creating Polk County effective November 16th 1840 based on map created by Col Jefferson whose office also drew up boundaries for Bay county James A .A . Bartow who settled here in 1892 after purchasing land from the Seminole Indians near present-day Fort Myers Beach on August 14th that year. At first it consisted of just a few homes and businesses along Bay Street and what is now Hearn Avenue; but within months, local farmers had begun to arrive here to sell their produce and goods they hadOLCd harvested from the surrounding countryside around Naples and Ft Myers Beach - both then part of Spanish America under US rule as part of Cuba's brief foray into North America during its time as an American colony following independence from Spain on November 6th, 1813! Over time, other builders followed suit - many coming from outside Polk County itself because that's where land was being offered at low prices for development purposes – until by 1925 there were more than 100 businesses located throughout downtown BARTOW! Bartow, Florida was founded in 1837 by Captain James Bartow. The area now known as Bartow was part of the Choctaw Nation and was named for Colonel John Bartow, an American Revolutionary War general. After the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1823, Captain James Bartow became its first governor. In 1830, he married a Seminole woman and moved his family to what is now Jacksonville. In 1837, he purchased land east of Tampa Bay from the Seminoles and built a plantation there. He also developed a small town on his property which he called "Bartowville." The town became known for its fine agricultural products and its slave population.
