Bartow is a city in Polk County, Florida. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County and part of the Tallahassee– Clearwater metropolitan area. It is also included in the Pensacola–Milton–Jacksonville Combined Statistical Area. In 1836, George Bartow was elevated to justice of the peace for Seminole County after serving as a deputy sheriff for that area for four years. He married Anna Maria Godfrey on November 16, 1838; they had six children: George Washington Bartow (1839-1914), Julia Jane Bartow (1840-1920), John Wirt Bartow (1842-1925), Effie Louise Bartow (1844-1927), and AnnaMaria Pilara Bartow (b. 1840). In 1851, he became prosecuting attorney for Seminole County and served until 1865 when he ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress as a Democrat against incumbent Andrew Johnson On July 3, 1886, George Wirt Bartow married Alberta suggestion by her mother who told him she would like to see him get an education so that he could be successful like his father had been before him He graduated from law school with high honors and passed the state bar exam in 1888 After practicing law in Tallahassee from 1889 to 1896 he moved to Pensacola where he founded Thebarton & Barton Insurance Company which became one of the largest insurance businesses in Florida He also served as Mayor of Pensacola from 1923 to 1927 and again from 1933 to 1937
