Bartow is a small town in Florida, located on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. The population was estimated to be around 12,000 residents as of 2000. It is bordered by Jacksonville to the south and east, Pensacola to the north, and Walton Beach to the west. Bartow has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa), typical of much of southern Florida. The earliest evidence for human activity in Bartow comes from an excavation Wonder Woman Site which was discovered in 1908 while construction was under way on Interstate 95. This site yielded evidence that early humans were living in this area during the Paleo-Indian period between 9000 BC and 6000 BC. In 1859, George Washington Matthews donated land along US 98E to create what is now Bartow County. The first courthouse was built in 1875 and soon afterwards school trustees began building new schools including one called “Pensacola Normal School” which opened in 1879. A post office operated at this location until 1914 when it became part of Jacksonville; however, mail continued to be delivered through Bartow until 1975 when it moved into its current facility in Jacksonville proper. In 1925, Artemas Ward bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of beachfront property extending from US 98W towards Pensacola Bay for $2 per acre (1 hectare). This acquisition formed the nucleus around which today's downtown area developed with initial development taking place on parcels withinWard's original holdings only after he died in 1928 without heirs apparent being able to take full advantage of his estate potentialities While developing these properties Ward also purchased additional parcels extending inlandward up Harbour Island proper prior eventually selling all but two acres thereof back ashore again forming today's core business district centred around Government House Park! Today more than 150 years later some 8500 people still call Bartow home making it one of Floridas fastest growing jurisdictions ever recorded! Bartow, Florida is the smallest county in Florida and it was created on December 15th, 1959. The County is named for Colonel John Bartow who served as a Captain in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The population of Bartow was 2,651 at the 2010 census. In spite of its small size, Bartow has made important contributions to Florida history. One of these contributions is its role in the development of aviation and Tourism in the state. Bartow was first settled by English people who arrived in what is now Polk County around 1665. The first European to visit what is now Bartow County was Giovanni Battista Caboto who landed there on July 3rd, 1542 while exploringFlorida's central region for Spain. He became the first European to set foot in today's Polk County when he reached Lakeland early on November 5th, 1542. Today many items associated with this early history are located within Bartow County including artifacts from Caboto's time and a reconstructed cabin used by him and his party during their stay here. In 1814 Spanish traders discovered what would become known as Tampa Bay and began trading with Native Americans here. When America gained independence from Spain in 1821, Tampa Bay became part of newly founded United States Of America and remained so until 1898 when it merged into Cuba as part of that country's empire under Spanish rule . Tampa Bay quickly regained its independence after American forces invaded Cuba . Aftermath of that war saw an influx of new settlers – primarily Germans – which led to an excellent commercial environment for entrepreneurs post-war . It wasn't until after World War II that significant development took place throughout Tampa Bay; however, it did occur gradually throughout most of previous decades due to lackadaisical planning by both local leaders (particularly those responsible for economic development) ."
