Bartow is a small town in the state of Florida, located within the county of Polk. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Koronac County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by Captain John Bartow and his family while they were on their way to sell natural gas near Lake Okeechobee. The current name comes from John Bartow III who served as Mayor from 2004 to 2008 and as a United States Senator from Florida from 2008 to 2013. The area now known as Bartow was first inhabited by Native Americans, who hunted and gathered food near present-day Hollywood Avenue and State Road 54. In 1892, Captain John Bartow founded a settlement here with his family, naming it after himself and son-in-law James Fenton Bartholomew II. In 1907, Captains John Larkin Bartholomew and Willis Saucier Bartholomew donated 320 acres (130 hectares) of land to the city for development into an agricultural district named after them. A post office called Hollywood had been established here in 1903, but it was renamed Bartow in 1908 due to confusion with nearby Hollywood Hills. In 1930, the old citrus grove east of downtown became the site of what is nowknown as Citrus Bowl Stadium when cattle ranchers bought 3/4 mile (1 kilometer) of forested bluffs across Orange Blossom Trail from Jacksonville developer Curtis Anson Land Company for $750 per acre (2700 m²). Construction began on January 15th 1931 under direction of Army Corps Engineer Colonel Alvin Dyer Jr., who designed and supervised construction of Jacksonville's first new civic center – then known as "the White House". After just 2 months completed at a cost of $5 million dollars ($115 million today), Dyer ordered all work stopped because he believed that Jacksonville would be ready for racial integration before any such effort could be successful statewide in Florida; instead, Jacksonville gradually adopted white self-government throughout most if not all aspects through its gradual integration until 1965 when African American voters registered at almost half their rate while whites only reached about one-third that percentage nationally by 1990 Census data courtesy US Census Bureau . On November 4th 1922 evidence emerged linking Oswald Garrison Villard, an American communist organizer living in Mexico City exile since 1920s who had become interested in developing oil reserves off Tampa Bay Area property leased by Shell Oil Company through Governor Mills Easley with plans for world domination via submarine drilling through water depths up to 580 feet (150 meters) -Operation Neptune's Spear -due to dearth or nonavailability offshore resources worldwide during early 21st century; accordingly convicted felon released on probation following recommendations offered by Seventh Circuit Court Judge Doyle which included release eligibility upon payment restitution plus 30 days imprisonment provided he resided within five miles radius OF his original arrest place along IH 35W & US 9N; nonetheless reoffended on own recognizance basis & continued fugitive status until May 20th 2006 when finally apprehended at home prison camp operated jointly by Mexican Federal Police & Bureau Of Alcohol Tobacco Control
