Bartow, Florida is a small town in Lee County, Florida. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico, about 20 miles (32 km) east-northeast of Fort Walton Beach. The population was 7,816 at the 2010 census. At one time it was the county seat of Lee County. The namesake of Bartow is unknown, but it may be derived from a Native American word meaning "place where the waves crash." According to local legend, Chief Bartow and his followers were taken prisoner by Spanish settlers during the early 19th century and held captive for several years before being released. Bartow has been inhabited since pre-historic times and is documented as having been settled by Seminole Indians in 1821. A Dutch family established a plantation here in 1824 and named it Hendrick's Plantation after Hendrik Vandenbrugh, an Englishman who had bought land in this area two years earlier. In 1830, Captain John Cledcalf Purchas erected a wooden wharf next to what is now Main Street in Bartow to serve as an entrance into Mobile Bay for his new colony of British subjects called the Alabama Colony. On July 4th, 1835, Andrew Jackson signed Executive Order No. 11 which designated Bartholomew Island as part of Mobile Bay specifically for US military use as an anchorage for vessels carrying troops or supplies across Mobile Bay during Indian Wars fought between Spain and America over control of Pensacola Sound/Bayou de la Choix (now St Marks Park). As part of that orderJackson ordered all rates on goods exported from Mobile Bay to be discontinued effective October 1st until such time as navigation improvements could be made ashore which took many months due to inadequate funding available at that time However prices continued unchanged until November 25th when Treasurer James Kintyre announced plans to open up Mobile Bay through dredging beginning February 1st following year's poor harvests caused by Typhoon Katrina During that period prices increased 50% making fruits and vegetables more expensive then ever before however with better navigations these high prices eventually ended when navigation improved Between 1840-1860s there were many plantations owned by northern investors along with some slaves working them including: Hendrickson's Landing near present day downtown Bartow; Surratt Plantation just northwest of downtown; Gaines Plantation southeast of town; Turnbull's Ferry Ranch southwest of town; Shackamaxon plantation just outside city limits

Bartow, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. Bartow was founded on March 3, 1836 by George Stephens and his brothers, John and James Stephens. The community was named for General Andrew Bartow who fought against Seminole Indians in Florida during the War of 1812. The Stephens brothers transported flour from Liverpool to Bartow in their ox carts on horseback. In 1845, the Stephens sawed logs for a wharf near present day Main Street and Whiskey Creek. A post office was established at Bartow in 1847, and mail arrived from Liverpool three times per week until 1861 when a railroad depot was built at present day Midtown Boulevard and US 1. The first store opened at 905 E Main Street in 1865. In 1901, George Stephenson donated $5,000 to build a school which became known as Stephenson Elementary School after him. In 1907/08 construction began on what would become Middleton High School; it opened its doors on October 4th 1908 with 105 students grades 7-12 On January 1st 1911 Middleton High School became an annex of Stevenson Elementary School which moved to its current site across US 1 from Stephenson Avenue in 1912 In 1927 Stonington Canal Company constructed an extension of their network from downtown Tampa through Bartow Island to east side of Lake Saturnin (now called Carefree Marina) making it possible for shipping traffic into/out of Tampa Bay without going through Clearwater or Stonington Harbor . This new stop also allowed for more efficient transportation within the town providing access to both land north of Ironton Road (then known as "shoreline") that served commercial interests along Lake Saturnin (now Carefree Marina), as well as acreage south of Ironton Road that formed Spring Hill Estates development . In 1954 all activities ceased operations on North Shore Drive between latitude 42° 29′ N - longitude 8° 24′ W due to heavy flooding associated with Hurricane Desoto That same year Lake Saturnin contained over 133 million gallons (~500 acre feet) of water making it one fifth the size it is now thanks mainly to Irma Atlantic storm surge caused by Hurricane Irma
