Bartow is a city located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 44,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city's name comes from General James M. Bartow who fought in the American Civil War and served as Confederate Commandant of Jacksonville. The first settlers in Bartow were two brothers named John and Samuel Hickey, who arrived on a raft from Mobile Bay on December 2, 1822. They built their first house on the site that now forms part of the downtown core of Bartow. A year later they erected a small log cabin known as "Hickey's Fort". In 1825, Samuel Hickey married Anna Maria McNaught and moved to what is now Bartow with his new wife and family. In 1830 AnnaMaria gave birth to their only child, John McNaught Hickey II (later known as James Murtagh). When AnnaMaria died in 1834 John II succeeded her as head of the family and continued to live in Bartow until his death in 1861. In 1840 Daniel Webster settled near present-day University Avenue and Creek Street; he founded the town of Webster Landing on Clearwater Bayou about 12 miles northwest of where Bartow stands today. Webster Landing grew rapidly due to its commercial opportunities; it had a store, blacksmith shop, grocery store, schoolhouse (1841), Methodist church (1844), post office (1846), wharf(s) for shipping wine and other goods (1851), watermill(s) (1857), distillery(s) (1872), brewery(s) (1910). After slavery was abolished by Ulysses S Grant during Reconstruction in 1865 following the end of the American Civil War, many white citizens began moving back into slave-held areas throughout Florida after Reconstruction ended – including most notably to Bartow where many African Americans took up farming or worked various jobs along US Route 1A which ran through town before becoming State Route 301A modern day US Route 1A
Bartow was founded on August 29, 1837, by a group of pioneers who set out from Fort Walton Beach. The town was named for General Andrew Bartow, a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War. The first post office opened in Bartow on October 1, 1838. In 1840, the United States Post Office moved to Bartow from its original location in Ocala. The first settler in Bartow was James A. Guthrie. Guthrie died in 1845 and his land passed through several owners before it was sold to Jno. Clementson and Wm. Hargrave in 1865. From 1865 until 1971, the town was served by the Ocala branch of the Florida Railroad Company's Tampa division. In 1971, BARTOW merged with neighboring Ponte Vedra Beach to form the current municipality of Ponte Vedra Beach-Bartow Incorporated
