Bartow, FL is a small town in the Florida Panhandle. The population was 9,471 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fort Walton Beach–Destin-Fort Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that Bartow now occupies was first settled by African Americans in the early 1800s. In 1868, Bartow became a county seat and landowner John Witherspoon donated 4 square miles (10 km²) of what is now Bartow County to the state of Florida as part of the Compromise of 1850. In 1898, after Florida acquired title to all but 4square miles (10 km²) of Alabama, it annexed much of what is now Bartow County for financial reasons. In 1899, Captain James Eaves bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km²) from Chief Joe Chilton on Bayou Calhoun for $5 and began developing it into an agricultural center with chalets and gingerbread houses. By 1901, Eaves had named his community "Bartow" in honor of Governor George Washington Carver who had contributed money to help finance development in Southeast Alabama including Bartow County. By 1920, there were 8 businesses operating in the town with a population over 100 people and just 12 homes; 10% were owned by men and 80% were rented or leased from others while only 2% held ownership outright. The post office opened on April 14th1920 with 3 residents using it until 1927 when mail service moved to Jacksonville due to high postage rates then again because there was no airmail service available until 1974 when UH-1 helicopter service started providing transportation between Jacksonville and Pensacola services which ended in 1982 when those services were discontinued due to budget cuts). During this time period also some new housing developments such as Cross Roads Estates went up along Bayou Calhoun while other areas like Pigeon Forge developed slowly but surely becoming almost full service with schools, churches, hospitals etc.. However during World War II things changed drastically as aluminum production increasedDemand for aluminum led to many companies moving their jobs out of state although most locals stayed behind including several small farmers who did not get relocated since they produced hay, cottonseed oil and other agricultural products essential for war production such as gasolineoline lubricants etc.. Many came back once hostilities stopped however many lost their homes including Capt John Witherspoon himself who returned home only after he negotiated a deal allowing military personnel living off base without Homes access to them while they rotated through stateside so he could stay close to his family]Although Post Office closed down around 1930 most Residents still sentMail via Air Mail during this time period] As war ended more people left than arrived however many local citizens decided They wanted their own Country so formed various militias which continue up until today ]As mentioned earlier many Local Citizens decided To form Militia’s To keep themselves safe From Invaders] Today’s Militia Members Include alot Of Women And Children Who Are Forced Into Service By Their Fathers Or Guerrillas As They euphemistically term Them Now] Bartow has experienced economic fluctuations throughout its history starting with prohibition which caused prices on goods doubled then tripled followed by World War I where metal prices quadrupled resulting in losses for both producers and consumers alike [] After Prohibition ended liquor sales grew steadily leading local politiciansTo pass laws regulating alcoholic content making bartows one OF THE LAST AMERICAN COUNTRIES TO ENACT A LAW REGULATING LABOR MARKETS ]. Bartow is a city in Florida, United States. It was founded in 1836 by James W. Bartow, a slaveowner and legislator who became the first governor of Florida. The city is named after him. Bartow is located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Jacksonville and 30 miles (48 km) east of Tampa Bay. In 2010 it had a population of 96,811 people. The history of Bartow begins with James W. Bartow, a slaveowner and politician who became the first governor of Florida in 1836. He named his new town after himself and began to build homes there. The town quickly grew into an important agricultural center due to its location at the mouth of the St Johns River, which allowed for shipping and transportation links between north-central America and Europe. In 1860, Bartow was elected as a Democrat to the state legislature where he served until 1861 when he ran for reelection as governor but lost to Governor John Cranch. After leaving office, Bartow developed some real estate in Jacksonville and started another small town called Neptune near St Petersburg in Pinellas County; this body soon dissolved into bankruptcy because of overspending on land purchases that were not worth what they were selling pricewise.. He died penniless at age 88 years old in 1922 without children or grandchildren to take up his cause.. His wife Ethel Elizabeth died two years later also penniless without any issue.. Today James W.'s nameakes still hangs over businesses such as BP Refinery & Services LLC., which are located just down I-95 from his birthplace homebuilt back in 1836still standing today!
