The area was first settled by Seminoles in the 1830s and was part of Indian Territory until 1861. After the Civil War, it became part of the US state of Florida. In 1912, Bartow incorporated as a city and has since grown to become one of the most important communities in central Florida. The city is located on the east bank of River Okeechobee, about 15 miles south-southwest of Jacksonville and 50 miles west of St Petersburg. In Bartow, Florida history, the city was founded in 1855 by Capt. James W. Bartow and his wife Sally. The city was named for Colonel John S. Bartow, a United States militia officer who had fought in the Seminole Wars and Texas Revolution. The city's first courthouse was built in 1858 on State Road 10 near present-day Indianola Avenue. In 1865, the city became part of Jacksonville County and moved to its current location on Clearwater Bayou in 1871. In 1922, the city annexed Plantation Heights to its westward extent; however, Plantation Heights reverted back to its original boundaries in 1926 after Jacksonville County claimed ownership of that portion of Clearwater Bayou east of Interstate 95. On October 15, 1952, Jacksonville County announced plans to build a new bridge over Clearwater Bayou known as the Bartow Bridge; however, those plans were shelved when it was determined that a new bridge would be more cost effective to build onuffs than bridges across bayous. The city has since been expanding rapidly with annexations from neighboring municipalities which have led to growth within its limits as well as expansions into adjacent areas including Anse de Cristo Key National Wildlife Refuge and Garden City Beach
