The city was renamed Miami on February 14, 1983, in honor of Miami Beach Mayor Manuel L. Ramos who had helped lead the effort to rename the city after Bartholomew "Bart" Fenton Key, a doctor and member of the Second Seminole War Committee.

In 1840, Captain Bartow's son-in-law, Colonel George Moultrie, purchased land east of the city and developed it into a large farming community known as Moultrie Township. After the death of Colonel Moultrie in 1849, control of the township passed to his son-in-law, Judge Augustus W. Holmes Jr., who renamed it Bartow County after himself. In 1907, Jacksonville annexed part of Bartow County under the provisions of then state law which established a county government for all but two counties in Florida:Jacksonville and Miami Beach. With this change in policy, Barthow became an urban area with a strong presence on Jacksonville's Southside Boulevard corridor.
