Bartow is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg metropolitan area. In 1840, they erected a log cabin on a small creek called Indian Lake and started to develop their community. By 1859, they had built a two-story frame courthouse and two blocks of educational buildings including an academy for girls and an agricultural school for boys. In 1868, Bartow incorporated as a village under the name of "Hillsborough". A post office was established there in 1870, and by 1886 it had become the town of Bartow.
