Bartow, Florida is a small town in central Florida. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the edge of Lake Okeechobee and is bordered by Polk County to the north and east, Osceola County to the south and west, and Martin County to the northwest. The ZIP Code for Bartow is 33820. The name "Bartow" comes from Indian Chief Bartow's hunting grounds that extended along present-day US 27 between Tampa Bay and St Petersburg. At one time, the area was part of Seminole Nation territory; today it forms part of US 27's eastern border with Polk County. The first white person in Bartow was James Hogg who settled there in 1819 as a result of land grants he received from President George Washington during his military campaign against Native Americans in Southwest Florida. The town became an official municipality on December 1, 1886 when it combined with neighbouring towns of Aubrey (now part of Kissimmee) and Cutler (now part of Davenport). In 1898, Bartow voters passed a resolution recognizing Jacksonville as the state capital due to its larger population at that time – Jacksonville had only been established as a city two years earlier. On November 3rd 1914 – just months after World War I began – Mayor William Ladd brought about passage of ordinance No. 1 which proposed annexation by Jacksonville into Barthow Township so that all residents would be treated equally under state law regarding education, fire protection etcetera; however this ordinance never made it through City Council because opposition came from influential citizens within Bartow including former mayor Ladd himself who felt that such an annexation would put him out of a job should another municipal election be held in wartime without his knowledge or consent In 1922 Mayor Wm Halsey decided not to pursue annexation because he felt doing so would conflict with existing county boundaries while other municipalities were annexing themselves without committee hearings or council approval; instead he endorsed creation of what is now Polk County government within Barthow Township . This action effectively ended any attempt by future mayors to annex new areas into Barthow Township . However annexation resumed briefly during World War II when many people fled acrossisdge borders due to combat but again stopped short when post-war boundary changes restored local autonomy . In 1949 Drs John Matson & Harriett Whipple founded Medical Corporation Of America which conducted research into medical techniques & products until their retirement in 1982 In 1951 Mrs Jane Doe moved from Fort Myers Beach FL & opened her own grocery store called "Jane's Place" which has continued operations since then
