Bartow, Florida is a city located in the Miami-Dade County region of Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 66,912. The city is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is bordered to the north by Kendallville, to the east by Boca Raton, and to the south by Fort Walton Beach. The name "Bartow" comes from a Seminole word meaning "meadow." The first settlement in what is now Bartow was made in 1827 when David Worth established a trading post on what is now Northwest 34th Street. In 1837, John Bartow founded an agricultural station at present day Northeast 3rd Avenue and Northwest 26th Street. In 1861, General William Troup destroyed all Buttermilk plantations near today's downtown Bartow after they refused to contribute 4% of their crop production to Union war efforts. In 1865 Colonel George Patton built his headquarters west of town on land that later became known as Patton Park. The city's first hospital was built in 1884 on Southwest Eighth Street between Harrison and Randolph Streets. The modern airport opened in 1941 as Bartow Municipal Airport and currently serves as one of Miami-Dade County's largest employers with more than 20 million passengers annually passing through its doors. Today there are over 100 businesses located within walking distance or bike ride distance of each other which makes it easy for people to get around town without having to take public transportation or drive long distances! Bartow is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now comprising Bartow was first settled by Alafia Indians in the early 18th century. In 1836, George Washington Bartow married Lillie Culp and the couple moved to Bartow from Jacksonville. The town was named for him in 1893. The city was founded on December 12, 1903 by John Waddell and his brothers-in-law J.C. Guthrie and James Ahern as a result of an agreement they had made with Polk County commissioners to provide a site for a new courthouse and jail on Indian Trail (now US 1). Waddell donated land for the city limits, which were laid out east-west on High Street between Second Avenue and Third Street near Lake Wales Boulevard (then US 43). In 1907, the first brick building for the county Courthouse—designed by architect Harry Weems—was built in downtown Bartow. That same year saw also the opening of First Baptist Church (laterknown as First Presbyterian), which replaced an earlier meeting house that burned down in 1892; it served as both court house and church until 1912 when it became known as Bartow City Hall Annex #1 after being purchased from First Baptist Church by Mayor Waddell along with other annexes during annexation process that summer. During World War II much of what is now downtown Bartow may have been destroyed due to bombing raids but much has since been rebuilt including several schools – Union High School (1941), University Preparatory School (1945), Catholic Elementary/Secondary School (1963) – Wright State College Building #2 & 3 opened 1945 & 1948 respectively followed by Southern Christian Leadership Conference Headquarters 1980s Campus Center 2002 Department Store 2009 fire started inside warehouse killing one employee
