Belle Glade, Florida was first settled by the Seminole Tribe in 1835. The town was named after Belle Isle on the St. Johns River in Detroit, Michigan. The area that would become Belle Glade was originally part of Clay County. In 1851, it became a part of Polk County and then Broward County. In 1932, it became a part of Palm Beach County. The population of Belle Glade increased from 508 in 1940 to over 11,000 by 1960. By the early 1990s, Belle Glade had declined significantly in population and development due to suburbanization and land use changes across the county seat of Fort Lauderdale. However, since 2000 there has been an increase in development around Belle Glade as new homes are being built on older parcels that have sat idle for years or have been abandoned due to lack of affordable housing opportunities nearby. Belle Glade is located approximately 12 miles north-northwest of Fort Lauderdale and 8 miles south-southwest of Miami Beach on state Road B1A (Broward Boulevard). The community is bounded by Uptown Palm Beach on the east side; Westchester Estates on the west side; Belle Epoque neighborhood on the southwest side; downtown Fort Lauderdale on the south side; and Hollywood Hills neighborhood on the north side. It forms a small loop around its namesake street which runs along its eastern edge before continuing northwest into residential areas just beyond Uptown Palm Beach where it meets Hollywood Hills Boulevard at an interchange with I-95/I-4/US 93/SR 1 (Downtown Fort Lauderdale). Belle Glade has a history dating back to 1892 when it was founded as a post office by mail order from England. The Belle Glade Natural Gas Field was developed in the early 1900s and became one of the most important gas fields in Florida. The area now known as Belle Glade was first settled by settlers in the 1800s, and there are still many reminders of that time including 19th century homes and businesses. In 1907, Belle Glade was merged with neighboring communities of Clearwater Beach and Stonington to form what is now called "Belle Glades". Belle Glades has been home to several well-known people over the years such as former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, movie star James Dean, author Truman Capote, and golfer Phil Mickelson.
