Belle Glade, FL is known as the "Coast Guard Capital of the World" and has been so since 1923 when the Belle Glade Coast Guard Station was established. The station provides law enforcement and emergency services to the community and is also home to the Belle Glade Museum which tells its own unique Coast Guard history. The first Coast Guard station in Belle Glade was built on land that currently includes Doheny Park. The original site for the station was a small island in Lake Monroe that served as a launchpad for launches from Belle Glade Municipal Pier. In 1923, Chief Petty Officer John Ahern purchased 5 acres of land at Doheny Park, located just east of present-day Belle Glade Boulevard, and construction began on what would become the present-day Coast Guard Station. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard Station has responded to numerous emergencies including hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, fires and more. In 2006, Hurricane Gustav caused extensive damage to structures within Doheny Park and resulted in many lost lives; however, despite this tragedy, Chief Petty Officer John Ahern remains responsible for all aspects of emergency response at theStation today. Today's CoastGuard Station offers a variety of opportunities for people from all over town to get involved in their community service. From working out at our exercise yard to serving coffee or lunch in our cafeteria all season long we are always looking for ways for everyone who visits us to make an impact!

The Belle Glade Coast Guard Museum gift history begins with a donation from Mrs. Lula Fortunato in 1951. The museum was founded in 1976 by Capt. Donatella D’Angelo and Lt. Colleen Doherty as the Belle Glade Historical Society to commemorate the coast guard's role in community service and preservation. In 1984, Captain Tony Russo donated a Corvette Stingray to the museum as part of their 40th anniversary celebration. In 1992, Captain John Kapp donated a lifejackets for the Museum's collection of maritime memorabilia. The following year, Capt. Tom Cutrone donated a new Corvette Stingray SSK to the museum as part of their 50th anniversary celebration and Staff Sgt. Vince Buresh contributed an old World War II torpedo boat to help mark the occasion.

During World War II, Commodore Chester Nimitz led United States forces in Operation Neptune's Spear which liberated numerous islands from Japanese occupation. In 1947, Commodore Paul Ziegler became Commandant of the Coast Guard and helped develop coast guard protocol during the Cold War era. The present day Coast Guard is made up of over 21,000 sworn officers and civilians who serve our Nation’s coastal communities across 137 countries aroundthe world.
Belle Glade is a town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It was founded in 1892 by Englishman John Belle Glade and his American wife Rachel. The Belle Glade Volunteer Fire Department, which still exists today, was organized in 1903. The Belle Glade Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1907. In 1912, Belle Glade High School opened its doors and remains the only high school in Miami-Dade County that has been continuously operated since prior to 1965. As of the 2010 census, the population of Belle Glade was 397 residents. Belle Glade is known for its citrus crops and agriculture. One such crop is grapefruit, which is grown here for juice or picked fruit along with other crops including olives and vegetables. Other agricultural products include corn (maize), beans (tahini), sweet potatoes, honeydews, oranges and other fruits and vegetables

In 1923, Belle Glade became an incorporated city with its own government and police department. The city's economy relied on citrus production until the mid-20th century when it also started to rely heavily on tourism.
