Belle Glade Coffee was founded in 1946 by Angelo Cappuccio and his wife, Nuala. The first roastery was located in the heart of Belle Glade. In 1957, the company opened its second roastery, which is now home to Belize Coffee Co., one of the largest coffee companies in the United States. In 1966, Angelo Cappuccio passed away, and his wife continued to run the business until her death in 1984. After her passing, Belize Coffee Co. was divided between two daughters - one who ran it as a family-owned business and another who took over reins as president and CEO. Since then, several other Roses have taken over leadership roles within Belle Glade Coffee - including current president Aileen Ramos-Fernandez and vicepresident Jeannie Koppelman - making it one of South Florida's leading coffee businesses.
Belle Glade, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Belle Glade first appeared on maps as early as 1821 when Spanish explorers called it "Bárbara." In that year, General Antonio Armijo met a group of Seminole Indians here and found them to be very friendly and helpful. He named the area Belle Glade after an existing French plantation in Louisiana where he had been stationed during the French and Indian War. The Belle Glade Plantation was built by Captain John Demarest in 1789. It became one of the largest sugar plantations in Florida. TheDemarest family sold their interests in Belle Glade in 1848 to James Hogg who renamed it Hogg's Grove after his father-in-law, Colonel James Hogg Sr.. After years of growth and modernization under various ownership changes, Belle Glade became an incorporated town on April 10, 1959 with a population of 2,191 people. The community has undergone many transformations over the years; some have been good for its residents while others have not been so kind. One example is how Belle Glade got its nickname - "The most beautiful place in America" according to tourism officials - because no matter how often things get bad there are always enough tourists around to make up for it! On November 5th, 2008 Hurricane Ike made landfall near Belle Glades bringing widespread destruction and loss of life across central Florida including those living within or close to Belle Glades. Many businesses were destroyed or severely damaged making reconstruction quick and difficult but ultimately successful given that many homes were never rebuilt at all due to insurance reasons alone!
