Belle Glade is a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. It is located on the shore of Lake Okeechobee and has a population of over 10,000 people. The name Belle Glade comes from "Blessed Isle" which was the site of an early French plantation. Belle Glade was originally settled by African Americans who were brought to work on the plantations during the late 18th century. The town began to grow after World War II when large estates were sold in the area. Today, Belle Glade is home to many popular tourist attractions such as its beaches, golf courses, and Museums. There are also several thousand residents who commute into Palm Beach County for jobs or shopping in downtown Belle Glade. Belle Glade has been around since the 1800s and it played an important role in American history. One of its earliest residents was Jethro Gibbs who arrived in 1795 and built a cabin on what is now known as Bay Boulevard. In 1824, General James Wilkinson stormed ashore at Belle Glade with his army looking for Seminole Indians led by chief Osceola. He discovered they had fled westward to Mims instead of facing Wilkinson's forces head-on like he wanted them to do. This event helped promote development in the area and made it easier for white people to move into what is now Belle Glade from other parts of Florida. During World War II, Belle Glade became one of the most heavily bombed areas in America due to its strategic importance as a landing ground for troops fighting against Japan's military forces during that war. A large number of homes were destroyed or damaged but most importantly many people were killed or injured because of it. Belle Glade, Florida was founded in 1881 by a group of English settlers who named it after Belle Époque, their home country. The community quickly grew and by 1893 had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1905 the name was changed to Belle Glade after the Belle Epoque Hotel opened in nearby Fort Myers. By 1920 the population had reached 6,000 and in 1927 it became an independent city. The community's growth continued until the late 1800s when many new homes were built near Fort Myers beach because of its popular accessibility and easy access to resources like phosphate rock and timber. Because of this, much of what is now Belle Glade was developed before any other parts of the state. Some of this older development can still be seen today including homes from the 1880s that still stand on quiet streets offglazier roads. In addition to its economic stability, Belle Glade also experienced some rapid growth during its early years due to its location close to major populations centers like Fort Myers and Naples. This influx of people helped create a sense of identity for the small town that continues to this day.
