Belle Glade is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Belle Glade is located on the banks of the St Johns River and on U.S. Route 301 near Jacksonville International Airport. Belle Glade was founded in 1892 by General James A. Hardee and his family as a small farming community about northwest of Jacksonville on modern-day Belle Glade Boulevard. In 1904, Hardee donated land to build what would become Belle Glade High School; it opened in 1909. The site for Belle Glade Stadium was donated by General Hardee to the town in 1912; it replaced an old farmhouse which had been used as a school house and store before that date. In 1922, Drury College moved from Tampa to Belle Gladue and established its campus there; it moved again in 1969 to its current location adjacent to Belle Glade Hospital (now St Joseph's Healthcare). After Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of Central Florida in 1992, many evacuees began moving back into BelleGlade- particularly those who were displaced by Sanford's construction of Everglades Park.[2] As more people returned, businesses began opening up again and development continued until present day with several grocery stores (including Stop & Shop), two strip malls (one redevelopment project called "The Grove"), two movie theaters (including Regal Place), three restaurants (including French Quarter Eatery), five hair salons/spa services, four tattoo parlors/massages shops, one bowling alley/arcades/, one printing shop/, one doctor's office (/portrait gallery/, pediatric patients' hospital) BelleGlade has always been home to many families with close ties to each other: parents have worked together since before children were born or siblings have grown up together One recent trend seen in most small towns around this time period is starting their own fireplaces - starting fires outside early morning or late night so that everyone can share warmth without going inside Many things have changed over time such as technology which has made life easier for some residents but also has caused some inconvenience like when there are no power outages for extended periods of time which sometimes forces schools to close because students cannot use laptops during class
