It is named for Belle of Ville de Belle-Isle-aux-Tourelles, France who had visited the area in 1885. The Bellegarde family ran a general store and post office until 1907 when they moved to mainland Florida and opened a grocery store there. In 1912 they built a large frame house on North Jones Street that still stands today. The Bellefontaine family also operated a restaurant called "The Monsieur" which closed in 1957 but can be seen now as an art gallery with its original menu and architecture remaining unchanged. In 1958, the town name was changed to Belle Glade after it was purchased by the Walt Disney Company from Mrs Belle Fontaine for $1 million (adjusted 2008 dollars). At first only employees of the company were allowed to live there; later others started moving into the town beginning in 1966 when Disneyland opened up nearby. The influx of people has caused some problems such as increased traffic on North Jones Street which became known as "The Strip". However, many people have come to enjoy living close enough to Disneyland that it doesn't really matter now Today, Belle Glade remains an agricultural community with about 60% being devoted to agriculture (largely fruits), 10% being dedicated to dairy or livestock production, and 10% being forested land used for hunting or fishing purposes only
