Belle Glade, Florida is a census-designated place located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 1,842 at the 2000 census. Belle Glade is bordered by West Palm Beach to the north and east, Jupiter to the south and west, and Pompano Beach to the northwest. Belle Glade is named after Belle Isle on Lake Como in Italy. It was founded as a plantation by John Sibley in 1868. Belle Isle became a state park in 1928. The area now bounded by State Road A1A (Upper Orange Blossom Trail), U.S. Route 914 (Golden Gate Bridge Boulevard), and Indian Trails Road was annexed into Belle Glade from Pompano Beach on May 14, 1961. Belle Glade is one of two towns in Palm Beach County that are both unincorporated communities - the other being West Palm Beach proper which has a town government dating back to 1904. The community of Belle Glade was platted on November 3, 1909 by developers Harry Hines and Jens Grosbrugger as part of their development of Hollywood Heights subdivision near Sunrise Boulevard and Federal Highway 461 (now US 914). The first post office opened in Belle Glade on October 12, 1911; it remained open until 1953 when it moved to West Palm Beach proper due to its close proximity to that city's new post office building which had been completed just one block away at Seventh Avenue South and Federal Highway 461 (now US 914). In 1932, Edward Crayhon built what became known as "the world's largest concrete pool" – measuring 120 feet long × 40 feet wide × 20 feet high – at his home across from Belle Isle Plantation Grounds where he used it for swimming during summertime until 1978 when he closed it down due to environmental concerns aboutchlorine levels present within the pool despite initially reporting them at 0 parts per million! By 1964, all commercial swimmer use had been banned inside state parks throughout Florida except for designated swimming areas such as Crystal River State Park which continued taking advantage of this loophole until 1976! In response thereto an ordinance regulating all water access within unincorporated communities passed through county legislature with broad bipartisan support but never made it into law because Governor Reubens vetoed it following heated public outcry! In 1984 Edison Electric Light Company constructed within BelleGlade an impressive 225 foot tall light tower/pumpkin patch commemorating its 100th anniversary that still stands today! This event also helped spur investment in neighboringWest palm beach over rivalPompano beachand spawned numerous businesses including restaurantsand retail stores along with several apartment complexes housing many workers who commuted daily between cities!
