Boca Raton is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 41,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Boca Raton is one of two incorporated towns in Palm Beach County and is also its county seat. The other town is Davie. The first settlement in what would become Boca Raton was made by Spanish explorers on July 4, 1693 when they discovered a group of Indians living near Fort Worth Island. Named for José de Boca, captain of the "San Marcos" (a ship captained by Juan Ponce de León) who explored this part of Florida in 1599-1600, the site became known as Santo Domingo Viejo after Spain's victory over Mexico at Cádiz on September 8, 1598. In 1735 Aurenheimer sold land to Captain John Stroud for £2 per acre. In 1847 local whaling captain Jens Christensen landed his ship "Oscar II" on Santa Rosa Key and began developing it into an island resort with 123 rooms and a 40-acre parkland complex which still exists today as Boca Raton Municipal Park (the present day address of City Hall). By 1873 all but 21 acres had been developed and incorporation as a municipality came about on December 12 that year with citizens electing James Fenton as their first mayor; he served until 1877 when Arthur Pither took office and served until 1880 when he resigned to run for governor against Wilfred Eason Jr..
