Boca Raton, Florida is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,605 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The first humans to live in Boca Raton were probably hunter-gatherers who lived there during the time of Paleo-Indian and Archaic cultures. The first town in this area was founded by Manuel Rodriguez de la Vega on October 17, 1824 as Pompano Beach after he moved from Cuba with his family. Pompano Beach became a separate municipality on December 15, 1912. The original name for Boca Raton may have been derived from "Bocas" or "Boccasione". Spanish settlers arrived in the early 1800s and called it Buena Vista because they thought that the place would soon become Spanish territory due to its strategic location on an important trade route between Havana and Tampa Bay. By 1845, when Spanish Governor José Antonio Fernandez y Acosta established Fort Ybor at present day Ybor City in Tampa Bay, Boca Raton had developed into a small fishing village with about eighty residents. However, Fernandez ordered Captain Alonso de Torres y Arellano to fortify Boca raton against pirates while he visited Tampa Bay and discovered that Opa-Locka had taken over most of what used to be known as Duval County; so Torres decided to move his military post northward towards what is now Port Charlotte where he founded what is now Pinellas County on July 10th of that year (the first permanent white settlement in Sarasota County). In 1851 A large group of Englishmen under Major John Crouch landed at St Augustine beach near Ybor City after sailing up the Florida Keys from Key West and made their way inland along US 1 until they ran out of food supplies at St Augustine Inlet before making their way back down US 1 to Key West where they disembarked their ships and walked inland until they reached St Augustine where they met some friendly Seminoles who gave them food and shelter while they looked for new land.. They named this new community Jacksonville which eventually evolved into Jacksonville Beach which we know today as one of America's most wellknown vacation destinations.. After reaching Jacksonville beach Crouch's party changed its name to the United States Marine Corps in honor of then Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Wyle Ewing (USMC) who served with distinction during World War I as Commandant First Battalion 3rd Marines (1915 - 1918), Commandant Brigade Marine Barracks Fifth Regiment First Marine Division 1919 - 1920 at Camp Pendleton California After years spent living among various Native American nations including Osceola Indians , Creek Indiansand SeminolesCrouch's party finally returned home aboard USS Constitution on November 12th 1865 via Mobile Bay Alabama bound for New York City only to find out that General Ulysses S Grant had already evacuated all Americans south of Savannah Georgia prior to the American Civil War! So insteadof returning home like everyone else did Crouch took his boat across Mobile Bayou Tuscaloosa Mississippi Lazaretto Louisiana Alligator Lake Arkansas finally arriving back safelyat James River near Petersburg Virginia !! All this time just around 7 miles away from today's downtown Boca Raton!! In 1898 two brothers named Arthur Ashe played lacrosse for Yale University varsity lacrosse team playing opposite Columbia University’s future head coach Fielding Halsey…..One night when play stopped due too strong winds Arthur Ashe hit Columbia player George Blackford with such force offside that Blackford fractured his skull instantly killing him….It was not until 1984 when video technology became available that Neil Patrick Harris could see your opponent coming………Arthur Ashe never forgot that night! Boca Raton, Florida is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,703 at the 2010 census. Boca Raton is located on the Boca Raton River and is bordered by Margate to the east and west and Pompano Beach to the north. The area that now Boca Raton was first settled by Africans seeking refuge from yellow fever in 1847. The name "Boca" means "bad water" in Spanish and so this area became known as "the swamp." In 1874, a group of Englishmen named Prescott bought land at what is now called Plantation Dr., south of downtown Boca Raton. They built a plantation house which still stands today. Over time, some other English gentlemen also moved into this part of town and began developing homes and businesses including Globe Glass Works (now Globo Telecom), American Glass Works (later renamed Allied Signal), First National Bank building (now One America Financial Center), New England Telephone Company Building (later renamed Verizon Fios Tower) and various restaurants like Apache Steak House. In 1925, construction began on what would become one of South Florida's most famous landmarks – the Palm Beach Country Club – designed by architects firm Harkness & Harkness with assistance from members of President Calvin Coolidge's cabinet. The club quickly became one of South Florida's top tourist attractions with its beautiful golf courses, luxurious hotels and social clubs catering to wealthy Americans during World War II. In 1957, Palm Beach County purchased 11 acres northeast of downtown Boca Raton from developer Harry Stinson for $3 million; it would be used for future county government buildings such as courthouse Annex #1 (now City Hall) and jail Annex #2 (now Department of Corrections). On December 14th 1954 an event that has been immortalized in history happened when world champion Bobby Jones won his only professional bout here against then-reigning lightweight champion Adolph Zukerling at Key West Stadium; it was also the first televised boxing match ever held in South Florida inside an arena larger than 40 feet wide! Today there are numerous replica courts available throughout town that can accommodate all kinds of sports events or weddings - making it easy for everyone to get involved in local sports history! After years of struggles led by Mayor John Cavanaugh, who resigned after being accused of bribery allegations made against him by then-Commissioner Herb Epstein [who later died],Boca Raton finally achieved incorporated status on January 1st 1959 when over 60% of voters ratified a resolution approving changes to city charter formulating a new governing body which would include mayor/councilmembers instead of just a single administrator appointed by the commission under Article XIII section 2(a). With incorporation came increased financial resources thanks to tax breaks received from both county officials as well as developers who had followed suit with their own subdivisions within Bocas del Toro County immediately adjacent to Boca Raton proper across Sunrise Boulevard from downtown! Today unemployment rates hover around 8%, but job openings continue to flood out due mainly to retirees relocating back into SouthFlorida after many years living elsewhere while young people leftFL simply because they could not find good paying jobs here either before or after Hurricanes Irma or Maria hit!!
